My project will harness the untapped energy in the ocean to provide electricity for the growing population in South Africa and greater Africa, using proven technologies already commercialised in other countries.

This project uses proven technology that harnesses the energy in the ocean, mainly wave energy but could expand into tidal energy, to generate electricity which is in short supply in South Africa (SA). We have identified a number of technologies that have been commercialised in other parts of the world. They differ but entail installing floating devices or buoys either out in the ocean or attached to jetties or harbour walls, or as undersea devices. We have engaged with the developers. The final choice will be based on its suitability to our ocean conditions, pricing and generation capacity. This is part of what the grant will be applied to. The forerunner, the Weptos system consists of floating rotors using generator technology similar to wind turbines. It is versatile, scalable and easy to maintain. The kinetic energy is sent to a central axel connected to a generator then onshore and into the power grid. It has an energy conversion of 60% and a very Low Levelized cost of Energy.

South Africa faced years of loadshedding and power cuts as a result of old power stations, bad or no maintenance, new power stations being delayed, corruption and theft. In short, the country cannot meet its power requirements. The approval of green technology projects, creating the regulatory environment and Public Private Partnerships (PPP) were dragged out which further exacerbated the situation. There is progress though in the last plans. The regulatory environment is ready in Cape Town (where the first is to be installed) to enable Private Power entities to participate in feeding into the grid. This is why the timing for this project is so perfect. It will solve the dire need for additional power generation in SA to meet the current needs while reducing our reliance on fossil fuel. Also the population growth in Africa is the highest in the world – this will contribute to meeting the increased power needs of the future with green technology

Shortage of Electricity has contributed to increased costs, inflation, industries and businesses closing down, foreign direct investment being withdrawn and many other dire impacts. South Africa’s carbon footprint is also very high due to the coal fired power stations still providing the majority of the power. So, the major benefit is the contribution to electricity in our country. That will result in the growth of our economy, creating jobs and pulling our beautiful country out of its decline. Wave technology is one of the most environment friendly renewable options available and will contribute greatly to reducing our country’s carbon footprint. It is predictable and consistent; it is not dependant on the weather ie sun or wind. It will contribute greatly to reducing our country’s carbon footprint. Even though solar and wind are green technologies, their recyclable waste.

This project will serve the country of South Africa and all its citizens. It will contribute to meeting the great need for electricity and is applicable to all electricity users. It will be fed into the grid. Directly it will more specifically benefit the people living in the coastal towns and assist in reviving their economies. It will create jobs which are sorely needed with 70% joblessness amongst youth and 34% overall. It will contribute to reducing South Africa’s carbon footprint and bring us closer to the targets set in the Paris accord to reducing emissions.

Armin Lategan, CEO of the company and the originator of this initiative. I have a BA in Film production and have been active in the field of producing music videos in the mainstream as well as working working on feature films. Sonnet Swanepoel, COO. Sonnet has a MSc QS and built up extensive experience in property development before moving into international Investment Banking operating between South Africa, London and New York in the main. This was followed by 10 years running companies as CEO to develop and execute turn arounds. She has been looking for alternative renewable energy solutions for a while and brings extensive experience in executing projects, running companies and developing financial solutions. The board will consist of the parties mentioned as well as the final partner brought in as mentioned in 1.6. The funders will also have representation as well as independants.

It creates jobs for fellow South Africans in the electricity field and the construction and development field. Furthermore, the electricity generated will also help south African businesses to grow and create jobs in other sectors such as in the industrial sector. South Africa's economic downturn was greatly influenced by the lack of security of energy. Many smaller businesses closed down with the subsequent job losses. It is this SME sector that is touted to have the greatest potential to create new jobs, which are sorely needed in a country where youth unemployment is at 70% and unemployment is 32,9 %. Increasing job opportunities will greatly contribute to alleviate poverty.

The additional electricity provided through our systems, has the potential to impact substantially on the hunger of South Africans. The security of power will enable equipment to work and cold rooms to function leading to increased jobs and food availability thus reducing hunger. Also improved food production and storage will contribute to reducing food prices and hunger. Loss of food due to spoilage as result of fridges not working or breaking due to power cuts will be eradicated. Foreign direct investment into South Africa will also increase once there is more stability in the electricity supply with a knock on effect on jobcreation and food security thus reducing hunger. With more available electricity the price should go down enabling the poor to access more power to store perishables and thus reduce food wastage. Crop yields will be improved through irrigation and greenhouses functioning properly.

The availability of additional electricity will contribute to reducing power cuts and loadshedding, thus enabling hospitals and all their equipment to function properly and so improving the level of health care provided in this country. This contributes to not only the physical but also mental health of the people overall. Also, the availability of good food from farms as discussed in previous points and at more affordable prices will also contribute to the health and well being of the people. The security of supply of power contribute to the quality of indoor environments and so to health. Especially childbirth facilities will benefit from security of power as childbirth happens 24/7. Additional power in the system will prevent medication from spoiling due to power cuts.

Availability of power improves the ability to provide more online tuition and computers to learners thus improving their development and productivity. Mobile phones and TV's also can be used more widely as mediums of providing education and training when more power is available. Children can also do their homework better as they now have light. Furthermore, in poor areas children often cannot get to schools and so having more electricity, remote teaching can be done. Energy poverty reduces availability of training resources.

My one partner, Sonnet, is a woman and we hope this will encourage other women to join the firm. There will be no discrimination based on gender. We will welcome women on every level all the way to the top. Women bring a unique perspective and skillset to the table and having women in the work force lead to improved creativity and problem solving. We also want to bring in role models and create more awareness to women for woman in the electricity field.

Due to loadshedding, SA has extensive problems with providing clean water due to pumpstations and purification plants not working consistently. Sewerage facilities were also greatly affected. Additional power will address this and ensure clean water is firstly available and secondly reaches the people. It will also enable building additional facilities for water purification for recycling which will greatly impact on the maintenance of clean water sources, a scarce commodity in SA. Energy is used in the extraction, treatment and storage of water and therefore, in SA, additional energy will have a very positive impact on the quality and availability of water.

SA's extensive power generation and transmission problems led to extensive loadshedding and power cuts. The solution lies to a great extent in expanding green energy and to a great extent through the private sector. The regulatory environment has been created to facilitate this, with Cape Town, where our first wave project will be rolled out, leading the way. Our projects use wave technology from the ocean which is 100% green. Wave technology has the added advantage of requiring a lot smaller footprint than solar or wind as its medium is far denser and produces more power per m2. The m2 of non-recyclable material used is also much less per MW generation than solar and wind power and thus reduces the waste into landfills. The use of wave technology produces consistent green power. It is in its infancy and is projected to still be improved vastly. Ocean power generation needs to grow by 33% per year to achieve net world zero by 2050 according to the International Energy Agency.

In our own business we will create decent work and contribute to the economic growth during the construction, operation and maintenance phases. But more than this, by adding additional power to the grid, it contributes to creating security of power thus enabling the creation of more businesses and jobs across many fields. Consistency of power not only contributes to creating new businesses but also to exsiting companies growth and additional jobs. Loadshedding had caused 350 000 job losses yearly. Having electricity also leads to innovation and even infrastructure upgrades because which all in turn create decent jobs and economic growth. One of the biggest needs in SA is security of electricity and we will contribute thereto

Electricity is a critical element of infrastructure in any country. SA has not had security of power for years. This method of power generation is resilient, it is consistent and it is innovative. Furthermore, having reliable power enables one to build other infrastructure. Without reliable power, no expansion or investment will be done in industrialization. Our project adds to the availability of power and therefore contributes to sustainable and inclusive industrialization. The technology is innovative and being continuously developed. The concept is relatively new to SA where only one other technology has been rolled out in harnessing wave technology. Once power is more readily available, it will definitely foster innovation as so much of modern technology have high power requirements.

Once again, due to SA's lack of power security and the subsequent loadshedding, cities and human settlements became very vulnerable to crime and infrastructure breaking down. Our project will contribute to the power grid and hence contribute to making cities more safe. Also, with power cities can provide the water needed for improving sustainability through increased planting. It helps by building a sustainable energy revolution as south Africa is sorely lacking in the field of clean energy which then helps the city by providing for years to come. It helps. It aids in the transition to a greener future bringing in more investments from overseas but also more independent energy which helps South africa break free from the clutches of loadshedding which has been plagueing our country for years

Using wave technologies have a lower environmental impact. The intent is also to design the systems for longevity, efficiency and reduction of waste. A further intent is to implement processes to recycle or repurpose materials used in the production of ocean energy equipment. We are also not polluting through the usage of coal or green houses gasses.

Using our technology for power generation will greatly contribute to combating climate change as it is environmentally friendly. In time it can even contribute to replacing fossil fuels as energy source and so further contribute to combating climate change. Wave technology reduces carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gas emissions greatly. It is suggested that if you replace 10% of world power with wave technology you can reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 1,5 giga tonnes. It is further thought that using wave technology can reduce coastal erosion and even mitigate temperature rise in ocean and ocean acidification associated with global warming. It will definitely contribute to SA's commitment to reduce its carbon dioxide emissions in terms of the Paris accord.

The technology ie wave technology is fairly new even in the rest of the world but in South Africa it will be very new, with only limited tests having been done in South Africa. Those were done 9 years ago before SA had the power crisis. Subsequently, it has become very competitive in terms of price and generative capabilities and thus very suited for implementation. The technology is in continuous development.

There is only one other company in South Africa that uses the ocean to create electricity and that is to power an abalone farm. There is some research being done though by different entities in South Africa
