In light of the imminent implementation of CBAM in 2026, my project seeks to explore strategies that will enable Algerian cement, fertiliser and steel exporters to proactively address these challenges while maintaining their competitiveness in the market.

01.01 Describe your project in more detail

Algeria as an exporter of high-carbon product, will be significantly impacted by the CBAM due to additional taxes on tis exports to EU. To maintain market share, I propose an innovative project to produce and utilize the green hydrogen locally, leveraging Algeria's abundant solar, wind, and water resources. Instead of investing in costly infrastructure for exporting green hydrogen, the project will collaborate with local cement, steel, and fertilizer producers to use the green hydrogen in their processes. This will green their final products, making them compliant with international climate regulations and maintaining their competitiveness without being affected by CBAM.

01.02 What is the main problem you are trying to solve?

My project addresses the challenges posed by the imminent Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM), designed to ensure compliance with carbon emission reduction and equity between local production and exported products. Algeria, as an exporter of high-carbon products, will be significantly impacted by this measure due to additional taxes on its exports to Europe if no plan is made to comply with international climate regulations

1. Environmental Sustainability: the project promotes the use of renewable energy sources (solar, wind, and water) to produce green hydrogen, significantly reducing carbon emissions and contributing to global efforts to combat climate change. 2. Compliance with International Regulations: By using green hydrogen, local industries can meet international climate regulations, avoiding additional taxes imposed by the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) and maintaining their access to the European market. 3. Economic Competitiveness: By greening their production processes, local cement, steel, and fertilizer producers can enhance the marketability of their products as environmentally friendly, thereby maintaining and potentially increasing their market share in Europe and other regions with stringent environmental standards.

1. The Environment: By promoting the use of renewable energy sources for green hydrogen production, the project contributes to reducing overall carbon emissions, supporting global efforts to combat climate change. 2. Local Industries: Specifically, cement, steel, and fertilizer producers in Algeria will benefit by integrating green hydrogen into their production processes. 3. Exporters of high-carbon products. 4. Local Economy: The project will stimulate economic growth by creating new opportunities in the green energy sector, 5. International markets: International markets, particularly those in Europe where the finished products will be exported, will also be indirect stakeholders of the project, as they will influence the demand for green products and associated green hydrogen. 6. main potential competitors include other renewable energy projects targeting industrial sustainability and carbon emissions reduction, as well as traditional fossil fuel-based energy sources. However, what sets this project apart is the unique focus on leveraging green hydrogen production to not only address carbon emissions but also maintain market competitiveness in the face of evolving international regulations, such as the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism. By integrating green hydrogen into local industries and promoting sustainable practices, it offers a comprehensive solution that not only benefits the environment but also ensures economic resilience and long-term viability for our stakeholders.
