In light of the imminent implementation of CBAM in 2026, my project seeks to explore strategies that will enable Algerian cement, fertiliser and steel exporters to proactively address these challenges while maintaining their competitiveness in the market.

Algeria as an exporter of high-carbon product, will be significantly impacted by the CBAM due to additional taxes on tis exports to EU. To maintain market share, I propose an innovative project to produce and utilize the green hydrogen locally, leveraging Algeria's abundant solar, wind, and water resources. Instead of investing in costly infrastructure for exporting green hydrogen, the project will collaborate with local cement, steel, and fertilizer producers to use the green hydrogen in their processes. This will green their final products, making them compliant with international climate regulations and maintaining their competitiveness without being affected by CBAM.

My project addresses the challenges posed by the imminent Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM), designed to ensure compliance with carbon emission reduction and equity between local production and exported products. Algeria, as an exporter of high-carbon products, will be significantly impacted by this measure due to additional taxes on its exports to Europe if no plan is made to comply with international climate regulations

Compliance with International Regulations: By using green hydrogen, local industries can meet international climate regulations, avoiding additional taxes imposed by the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) and maintaining their access to the European market. 3. my project contributes indirectly to good helath and well being by reducing Air Pollution by promoting the use of green hydrogen and renewable energy sources, to improve air quality. This can lead to better respiratory health and overall well-being for communities living in areas affected by industrial emissions. It also offers healthier work environments by implementing sustainable practices in industries such as cement, steel, and fertilizer production. Reduced exposure to harmful chemicals and pollutants can contribute to better physical health and well-being among workers. By mitigating climate change through the reduction of carbon emissions, my project contributes to preserving ecosystems and biodiversity.

By integrating green hydrogen into local industries and promoting sustainable practices, it offers a comprehensive solution that not only benefits the environment but also ensures economic resilience and long-term viability for our stakeholders.
