Describe your project or startup in a few words
Our startup has a dual focus on supplying rabbit meat for expatriates in Addis Ababa and export markets; producing premium fur and leather; and organic fertilizer. It aims to empower youth, particularly females, by creating sustainable job opportunities.
01.01 Describe your startup in more detail
Our startup aims to introduce a rabbitry aggregator to empower youth entrepreneurs by replicating successful rabbit farming models. By training young people to start their own rabbitries, we aim to create job opportunities and reduce unemployment rates. Rabbit farming offers a steady income, enhancing financial stability and independence for young entrepreneurs. As an aggregator, we will provide continuous training and support in rabbit husbandry, breeding, and farm management, ensuring best practices are followed. Successful rabbitry businesses can stimulate growth in related industries such as feed production, veterinary services, and meat processing. We will facilitate connections between farmers and these supplementary businesses, fostering a robust ecosystem. Our model supports gender equality and women's empowerment, promoting economic and community development. By aligning with SDGs, especially SDG 1, SDG 2, SDG 5, SDG 8, and SDG 17, it contributes to the broader global agenda.
01.02 What is the main problem you are trying to solve?
Rising Rabbitry is committed to making high-quality rabbit meat available locally for the growing expatriate community in Addis Ababa, home to many continental and international organizations. Additionally, we aim to export rabbit meat to nearby Middle Eastern countries such as Qatar and the UAE, which currently source their supplies from other African nations like Egypt, South Africa, and Kenya. By tapping into these markets, we seek to establish a reliable supply chain and meet the rising demand for premium rabbit meat both locally and internationally.
01.03 Tell us the major benefits and/or advantages of using the product/service that your startup provides (at least 3).
Our principal product, rabbit meat, offers numerous health benefits: it is high in protein, low in fat and cholesterol, rich in vitamins and minerals, and easily digestible. Rabbit fur and leather provide exceptional softness and comfort, warmth, lightweight, versatility, affordability, durability, and aesthetic appeal. Additionally, rabbit waste is highly beneficial. Rabbit manure, rich in Nitrogen, Phosphorus, and Potassium, improves soil structure, promotes microbial activity, and is odor-free. Rabbit urine, high in nitrogen, acts as a natural pest repellent and aids in disease prevention, offering an eco-friendly and cost-effective alternative to synthetic fertilizers and pesticides. Moreover, we create job opportunities for youth, particularly females, by replicating our farm's successful breeding practices and buying back their produce, ensuring easy market access. This united effort significantly enhances our export capacity.
01.04 Please describe who exactly your startup’s product/service is aimed at serving. Who are the targeted beneficiaries?
The primary target market for our rabbitry includes the diverse foreign community residing in Ethiopia and the nearby Middle Eastern countries. These regions are experiencing a growing demand for rabbit meat, and we aim to meet this increasing consumption with our high-quality products.

Tewodros also conducts extensive research on rabbit breeding and oversees the importation process of California White and New Zealand White purebred rabbits locally with the Ministry of Agriculture and Kenya's National Rabbit Conservation and Training Institute. Diyana Getachew, my other partner, is a graduating year student in Accounting and Finance from a private college. She handles all financial transactions, records farm processes including births, deaths, purchases, and sales. Diyana also shares feeding and care duties with me for the rabbits.

02.12.02 Responsible consumption and production - Justification for my startup
Rabbit farming ensures sustainable consumption and production through the principles of the circular economy by maximizing resource efficiency and minimizing waste. Rabbits efficiently convert feed into meat, requiring less feed, water, and space than larger livestock, reducing environmental impact. Their manure and urine, rich in nutrients, can be repurposed as natural fertilizers and pest repellents, decreasing reliance on synthetic alternatives and promoting sustainable agriculture. Furthermore, rabbit farming integrates seamlessly with other agricultural activities, creating a synergistic system where resources are reused and recycled. Rabbit manure can be composted to improve soil health, boosting crop production, which can then feed the rabbits, forming a closed-loop system. Utilizing local feed sources and producing additional products like fur & leather, rabbit farming supports sustainable production and reduces environmental impact, enhancing overall agricultural resilience.

Rabbit waste is extensively utilized in various forms of cultivation, serving both as organic fertilizer and as a natural pest control solution. The manure produced by rabbits is rich in essential nutrients such as nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium, which are vital for plant growth. When applied to crops, this organic fertilizer enhances soil fertility, improves soil structure, and promotes robust plant development. In addition to its fertilizing properties, rabbit urine contains high levels of nitrogen and acts as an effective natural pest repellent. When diluted and sprayed on plants, it helps deter a variety of pests, reducing the need for chemical pesticides. This dual use of rabbit waste not only supports healthier, more sustainable agricultural practices but also minimizes environmental impact. By integrating rabbit waste into cultivation, farmers can boost crop yields, reduce costs associated with synthetic fertilizers and pest control.

Rising Rabbitry is at the forefront of commercial rabbit farming in Ethiopia, pioneering the supply of high-quality rabbit meat to local restaurants. While a few individual breeders cater to niche markets such as pets or personal consumption, our focus on sustainable production positions us uniquely in meeting the precise needs of the culinary sector within Ethiopia. This strategic advantage underscores our leadership in introducing a consistent and reliable source of premium rabbit meat to local consumers. On the international front, while established competitors in Southern African nations pose challenges, our proximity to Middle Eastern markets and the robust logistical capabilities of Ethiopian Airlines provide significant advantages. These factors enable us to efficiently penetrate international markets, delivering fresh and superior rabbit meat to discerning buyers abroad.
