Describe your project or startup in a few words
Arable develops cutting-edge market specific vertical farming technology, including turnkey containerized farms and modular units. Our pesticide-free system use 90% less water and land, producing sustainable, fresh greens while reducing carbon emissions.
01.01 Describe your startup in more detail
Arable design and develos vertical farming technology, offering turnkey containerized vertical farms and farm management software systems. Our technology reduces water and land use by 90% compared to traditional farming and eliminates pesticide use. We also offer smaller, modular vertical farming units, making this technology more accessible in South Africa and enabling the production of sustainable, healthy produce with reduced carbon emissions. Driven to design market-specific technology for Africa, we emphasize sustainable development and focus heavily on resource reduction. Arable's business model includes developing and selling vertical farming technology for initial revenue, while software and rental programs for smaller commercial units provide recurring revenue. Additionally, we leverage our technology to grow and sell fresh produce directly to the market through weekly orders to the culinary and hospitality industries and bulk orders to major distributors and retailers.
01.02 What is the main problem you are trying to solve?
The main problem Arable addresses is food insecurity and the environmental impact of traditional farming. Africa faces a growing demand for fresh produce amid limited resources, rapid urbanization, and climate change. In Africa, water scarcity is a significant issue, and traditional farming practices often result in soil degradation, water scarcity, and excessive pesticide use, leading to environmental degradation and declining crop yields.
01.03 Tell us the major benefits and/or advantages of using the product/service that your startup provides (at least 3).
Arable's vertical farming technology provides significant advantages, using up to 90% less water and land while eliminating pesticides to grow healthier, sustainable produce. Our modular and turnkey containerized farms ensure consistent, year-round supply, tailored to Africa's specific needs. By growing produce closer to markets, we reduce food miles, costs, and carbon footprint, providing consumers with fresher, healthier, and hyper-local greens. Additionally, our partnerships with schools and local organizations promote sustainable farming education, empowering communities and creating job opportunities. This comprehensive approach addresses food insecurity, climate resilience, and environmental impact.
01.04 Please describe who exactly your startup’s product/service is aimed at serving. Who are the targeted beneficiaries?
Arable's products and services cater to two main beneficiary groups: produce and technology customers. On the produce side, we supply high-end restaurants, delis, caterers, and hotels requiring consistent, high-quality greens year-round, as well as retailers and distributors looking to offer sustainable, pesticide-free produce to health-conscious consumers. On the technology side, our turnkey containerized farms and modular units empower aspiring and existing urban farmers, while our compact hydroponics unit, the Edugrower, serves schools and educational institutions by promoting sustainable agriculture education. Additionally, corporate offices benefit from the commercial grower, enhancing employee wellness through fresh herbs and greens grown on-site.
