01.01 Describe your startup in more detail
We are a marketing-led social enterprise, collectively creating pattern-breaking platforms through insights, strategy, creativity and immersive experiences that shift attitudes and encourage positive behaviour change. As a collective, we collaborate with individuals & organisations to find ways to make society work better for everyone.
01.02 What is the main problem you are trying to solve?
South Africa has one of the highest alcohol-related road fatality rates in the World. Studies have shown that the prevalence estimates of driver intoxication in car accidents are between 33% and 69%. Even more alarming are the attitudes and resultant behaviours toward drinking and driving, with 4/10 drivers saying they would drive after drinking when there is an opportunity to do so. Over the past few years, road deaths amongst the youth have increased significantly, and statistics show that the youth contribute the highest number of road fatalities annually when compared to other age groups. Therefore, the main problem we aim to address is drinking and driving amongst the youth in South Africa, to reduce road fatalities, ultimately contributing to the increased health and wellbeing of youth in South Africa.
01.03 Tell us the major benefits and/or advantages of using the product/service that your startup provides (at least 3).
Contextually relevant awareness: we have observed that most of the current initiatives that address drunk driving happen at times when the intended audiences may not be thinking about their behaviour (outside of the consumption moment) Active education: We know that training is more effective when you 'show' people rather than 'tell' them the dangers and impact of drunk driving. Our platform drives active education on mindful drinking, to empower the youth to be more cognisant of the choices they make. Influencing behaviour change: Research indicates that while most people have good intentions before a night out, they usually succumb to social pressures in the moment. Contributing factors to this include a lack of alcoholic alternatives in the moment, as well as suitable alternative transport options. We seek to partner with organisations to address these barriers, removing the friction involved in making positive behaviour choices.
01.04 Please describe who exactly your startup’s product/service is aimed at serving. Who are the targeted beneficiaries?
Our target beneficiaries are economically active youth in township and urban areas where there is a high concentration of vehicle vehicle ownership and social activity. Studies have shown that the prevalence estimates of driver intoxication in car accidents are between 33% and 69% the youth contribute the highest number of road fatalities annually when compared to other age groups.

As a collective, we work with multiple partners to deliver the work we do. A significant component of the NothBoth platform is driven through on-the-ground engagement, which requires the employment of ambassadors on a contractual basis. Through our partner, we focus on employing and training up the youth specifically. Research shows that young people struggle with the cost of seeking employment and gaining relevant experience before formally entering the workplace. This opportunity for casual employment will help address the costs associated with searching for formal employment and provide experience that they can use in future. The youth employment model has an additional benefit, in that when we train our employees as ambassadors, they too are beneficiaries of the mindful drinking message and movement we are driving.
