01.01 Décrivez votre startup en détail
TeamUpcyclers is a pioneering social enterprise dedicated to empowering underprivileged communities through innovative upcycling projects. By transforming textile waste into African-made body wear, footwear, bags, accessories, functional artworks, and reusable sanitary pads. We aim to foster environmental sustainability, preserve African culture through our African-made upcycled goods, and foster economic development. Our mission extends beyond environmental protection and cultural preservation to include educating marginalized communities on climate change, African heritage preservation, the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and sustainable energy practices through both online and offline channels. Our operations focus on training members of marginalized communities in Anambra State and Karon-majigi, Abuja, including women, children, youths, persons with disabilities (PWDs), and internally displaced persons (IDPs), in the art of upcycling and cultural heritage preservation.
01.02 Quel est le problème principal que vous essayez de résoudre ?
TeamUpcyclers solves: 1. Period Poverty: The World Bank estimates that over 500 million people worldwide do not have access to sufficient facilities for maintaining period hygiene or menstrual supplies. Female pupils miss school when they are menstruating, and 25% of Nigerian women live in poverty during their periods. 2. Textile Waste: With 92 million tons of textile waste going to landfills each year, the fashion industry accounts for 4% of all garbage produced worldwide. Global textile emissions are expected to increase by 50% by 2030 (Earth.org). I was able to discover the scope of period poverty by drawing on my own experiences as a young girl growing up in extreme poverty as well as reading reports, data, and statistics that showed how many Nigerian women and students were impacted. Also, EarthOrg and Malgorzata (2018) provided data on textile waste and its effects on the environment, highlighting the pressing need to address the trash generated by the fashion industry.

The solar lanterns and waste to energy solutions we introduced help to lower CO2 emissions compared to traditional energy sources, aligning with our mission to reduce our environmental impact. This session highlighted our efforts to minimize energy consumption and reduce dependence on non-renewable energy.
