It’s a negative norm to see animal wastes been burnt or badly disposed in Nigeria, Africa. This project aims to drastically reduce, if not halt, these uneconomical and dangerous actions by recycling these wastes for wealth and economical developments.

Animal wastes from poultries, abattoirs, animal farms, etc, are usually burnt or badly disposed when they can be used for great economical benefits like manure, fertilizer, kitchenwares, animal meals, footwares, etc. All these are what this project seeks to achieve by recycling animal wastes like dungs, bones, hooves, hairs, furs, skins, blood, etc. Realistically, dungs from abattoirs & animal farms are mostly disposed by open fire burning all over Africa, this project will package them as manure for plant-based farms or dispose of them properly. Bones, hooves, blood, hair, are major wastes from abattoirs that are disposed either by open fire burning or washed into water bodies all over Africa. We will turn them into animal meals or kitchenwares instead. Apart from the high economical (monetary) gains of recycling animal wastes, the negative environmental impacts like air & water pollution, ozone layer depletion, eye-sore, etc, are also drastically reduced if not eliminated.

The negative environmental impacts that badly disposed animal wastes creates are what I am trying to solve. When animal wastes are disposed by open fire burning or washed into water bodies, environmental pollutions (air & water especially) are created which may take a very long period to clean especially water pollution. The pungent smell that seeps through the windows of our vehicles or homes due to the open fire burning of animal wastes (dungs) from nearby poultry, abattoir, or animal farm, that’s the main problem I am trying to solve. The depletion of the ozone layer by the methane released into the atmosphere through open fire burning of animal wastes is what I am trying to stop. The discarding of the enormous natural resources that abound in these discarded animal wastes are what I am trying to solve. The disorientation of those who believe that we as Nigerians or Africans are too immature, naive, or too animalistic to properly discard these wastes is what I am trying to solve

The first major benefit of this project is Cleaner Environment. This project is about moving from one abattoir, poultry, or animal farm to another, collecting their animal wastes for recycling into economical products or disposing them properly. The environment will be cleaner. The second major benefit of this project is Wealth Creation. From childhood, I have dreams of owning farmlands, ranches, and companies where products can be sold for profit hence become wealthy and most importantly, enrich other people’s life including my families’. The third major benefit of this project is Job Creation. Starting the project will create more than 10 direct jobs and more than 50 indirect jobs but when fully established, more than 50 direct jobs and 100 indirect jobs. Another major benefit of this project is Good Use of Natural Resources. Personally, I hate wastages. Natural resources are in abundance but not equally nor equitably shared hence it’s important to maximize any at one’s disposal.

The first targeted beneficiaries of this project are people living in the communities where these uneconomical actions take place. From owners & those working in the poultry, abattoir, or animal farm to passersby to government, this project aims to benefit everyone including large organizations like Total Energies, United Nations, World Health Organization, etc. The next targeted beneficiaries are owners & workers of animal & plant farms. Since the project aims to produce animal feeds & manures, animal & plants based farmers or workers will benefit alot because the raw materials are local, cheaply obtained hence selling price will be lower compared to current similar products. A lot of research will be done on how to improve on each of the products so as to obtain maximum yield for both animals & plants based farmers. Products will be specie/class specific for plants/animals respectively.

Apart from the more than 10 direct jobs and more than 50 indirect jobs this project will create when starting, after it has been duly established, more than 50 direct jobs and hundreds of indirect jobs will it create. Also, when fully established nationwide and/or continentally, more than thousands of direct & indirect jobs will it create and this will move workers/people (mostly Africans) away from poverty because when fully established, employees in this project will be paid a minimum far above the minimum wages of their respective countries. This project will have sections like Waste Collection, Waste Processing, Waste Recycling, Products Sale, Marketing, etc and each section will require employment of individuals from low income economies thereby lifting them out of poverty.

This project aims to increase the capacity of individuals from poor households, increasing their capacity to purchase affordable and high yield manures or animal feeds so that their home gardens, small backyard farms, and commercial/industrial animals or plants based farms can produce greater/better yields and make affordable food available for even the poorest of the poor. This project is aimed at continuous improvement and critical innovation at solving world hunger. With the use of compost manures, fertilizers, animal feeds, and other products to be generated, this project has a focus of using these means to enhance food security round the country and support sustainable farming practices firstly locally then nationally and finally internationally. All these are aimed at ending hunger, achieving food security, improving nutrition, and promoting sustainable agriculture.

Societal or Environmental wellbeing is poor in most parts of Africa due to neglect & negligence from those responsible for it. It has increasingly become the responsibilities of private individuals & organizations through Corporate Social Responsibilities CSRs to improve the wellbeing of the societies closest to them. This project aims to play a very critical, immense, and intensive role at increasing the societal wellbeing of Nigeria and Africa. We will continue from where Otunba Gadaffi (Owner of DMT Mobile Toilet) stopped and even go further to making the environment healthier and safer for all. With proper collection of wastes and its recycling, as indicated in Affordable & Clean Energy below, this project will prevent pathogens from spreading, reduce pollution thereby ensuring availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all.

The mismanagement of animal wastes is due to the low level of education & orientation of those involved (abattoir owners/workers, government, others) on the path of waste management. Having seen the problem, this project aims at educating, orientating, and training everyone involved in the management of abattoir wastes. From the workers to owners to public servants to even the ordinary citizens, there will be a keen focus on reorienting everyone towards sustainable waste management. As a form of environmental stewardship recognition, there will also be certification for those who have gone through our waste management training with better knowledge. We will create very short slogans and jingles that will help to educate the general masses on the importance of sustainable waste management.

This Abattoir Wastes Recycling project is an encompassing project, it’s an all-comers project in that there is no activity in any of its sections that can not be performed by either male or females. This will make us commit to achieving gender equality. From collection of wastes, sorting, processing, sales, marketing, etc, all these are functions that can be duly performed by females so the drive to employ the female gender that are competent is naturally there. There will also be intentional act of training and supporting women who are naturally motivated to take up leadership roles in the project. This will help us to achieve the required gender equality and women empowerment.

Realistically, most abattoirs in Nigeria are intentionally sited very close to a water body. A subconscious plan that the abattoir wastes, especially the liquid & semiliquid wastes, will be disposed easily into the water body. This is viewed as an easy & cost effective way of abattoir wastes disposal. Such opinion is totally wrong as it pollutes the water bodies. This subconscious orientation must change and that’s the aim of this project. The common negative practice of disposing abattoir wastes into water bodies will be drastically reduced after the implementation of this project nationwide and/or worldwide. The abattoir wastes will be collected, properly stored, and then recycled. Orientation change jingles will be aired for a change of mindset of the general populace. We will work with the government to ensure abattoirs are not constructed close to waterbodies. These are ways that this project will ensure availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all.

Apart from abattoir wastes, this project, after been strongly established, will go further to collect human wastes (feaces). This is due to the trending increase of private homes now supplying their cooking gas from their septic tank. The increasing use of Biodigester Septic Tanks in private homes requires an urgent call for the commercialization. This project aims at generating affordable & clean energy (cooking gas) in commercial quantities for sale. Since there are no centralized feaces collection in Nigeria, we will move from house to house to help private homes in the collection of their feaces (emptying their septic tanks), deposit these wastes into our Biodigester Septic Tanks and generate clean energy (cooking gas) which will be safely stored in large storage tanks before been sold in units at affordable prices. These and many more futuristic innovative ways are how this project will ensure access to affordable, reliable, sustainable and modern energy for all.

The use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) has contributed a lot to make work decent so this project will have a deep focus on the use of PPE during working hours. With the constant use of head covers (helmets), noise masks, hand gloves, overall clothing, safety boots (rain boots) and other required PPE, this project will definitely promote sustained, inclusive and sustainable economic growth as both male and female employees will be recruited for full and productive employment and decent work. The project will seek to achieve a circular economy in the waste management sector.

In collect the liquid & semi-liquid wastes from sources, zip-lock air-tight opaque bags will be used. This innovative method of waste collection/transportation prevents the spread of pathogens and environmental pollution. In converting these wastes into useful economic products (i.e rendering), infrastructures like advanced & sophisticated rendering techniques & processes, aerobic & anaerobic digestion systems, gasification techniques, vacuum crushing to powder, enzymatic & microbial treatments, catalytic processes, SAP Management Systems, and so much more. All these will help us build resilient infrastructures and create the sustainable industrialization that we much desire. Since a circular economy is one of our major goals, we will implement innovative techniques for waste management (recycling), support development of sustainable industry practices, and above all, seek to be innovative in every section of this project.

All over Africa, there is a wide margin between the rich and the poor, even the number of middle class populace keeps reducing in most African countries. It has been observed that most abattoirs are cited in poorly managed environments where the poorest of the poor resides. This project will therefore cite Abattoir Waste Collection Centers in areas like these while the Recycling Plant will be cited in one of such regions. Both the Centers & Plant will create sources of job opportunities for these poor residents. With fair wages paid to indirect workers and national minimum salaries paid to direct employees, these marginalized group of people will have the opportunity to move themselves up to the middle-class level hence the societal inequality gradually reduces. With good working conditions, they will be able to reorientate their minds away from poverty where the inequality actually starts from.

The first factor to be considered to ensure human safety is the environment, if it is unsafe then it’s residents are also not safe. Since this project aims to make the environment a safer place for humanity, then it will place a very important role at making cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, sustainable, and resilient. Once there is environmental improvement in a certain area of the country, human settlement comes naturally. With the drastic reduction that this project will create in environmental pollution, the environment will become better and safer for human to live in because efficient waste management systems that this project will introduce will contribute a great deal to achieve a cleaner, healthier, safer urban environment as sustainable waste management is achieved.

The key motivation to achieve responsible consumption is ‘take what you can finish at once and finish what you have taken,’ this is how wastages can be drastically reduced. However, there are some materials like bones that can’t be consumed in their raw form but edible in their processed forms. This project aims at ensuring these raw materials like bones, bloods, offals, hooves, etc are not only processed (recycled) for direct human consumption but are also used to produce other human requirements like kitchenwares, foot-wears, clothings, etc. This will help to easily achieve sustainable consumption and circular economy as wastes are not just left to decay naturally but are maximized in their usefulness. This project will take it a step further, after the recycling abattoir wastes have fully been established, to recycling of other types of environmental wastes thereby promoting responsible consumption.

Considering climate change, one of its impact is the depletion of our ozone layer and open fire burning of abattoir wastes that takes place in most areas of Africa is contributing to this depletion. Since this project aims at drastically reducing open fire burning of abattoir wastes by ensuring that these wastes are thoroughly recycled for environmental benefits, it will contribute a great deal at combating climate change and its impacts. Abattoir wastes left for natural decomposition produces methane which is an important component of biofuel. Methane, when used up openly will cause negative climate changes but when contained and channeled properly for economic use, it will have no negative impacting on our world. This project aims at taking urgent actions to combat climate change and creating efforts to lower greenhouse emissions thereby achieving climate resilience.

There is enormous advantage in this ‘recycling abattoir wastes’ project. Offals for example, obtained from abattoirs and animal farms are converted to manures or fertilizers but if this isn’t done, they are properly disposed off into the forests to make trees grow thereby promote sustainable use of terrestrial ecosystems. When things are found where they are not wanted, they become pests, weeds, and source of human discomfort. This project will help to ensure things are found where they are supposed to be. Manure’s & fertilizers obtained from this project will help improve the health of our soil and encourage biodiversity. We will work with environmental organizations in Nigeria to support sustainable land use practices, encourage ecosystem services, and reduce environmental pollution.

He who comes to equity must come with clean hands. For peace to reign, justice must be duly served. Transparency is very important in serving justice. Transparency is also very important in dealing with wastes so there will be transparent and fair management of wastes to promote cooperation among community members. We will make sure that wastes collected from one part of the country are not just dumped in another side. We will prevent all forms of spillage of these wastes but when such happens, quick retrieval will be done. A cleaner environment will naturally promote peace & societal inclusion. There are stories of hotels releasing their sewage into the environment especially during rainfall, we will orientation owners of such hotels against such evil act in order to promote peace, trust, and justice in the society.

Theoretically, this project has to contribute in achieving almost all of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals and this can not be achieved without partnership with public, private, national, and international individuals and organizations. Realistically, our major focus with this project encompasses at least 10 of these SDGs with core targets on SDGs 3, 6, 7, 9, and 13. We will partner with several environmental & health organizations like World Health Organization WHO, United Nations Environment Program UNEP, Women Environment Program WEP, Global Alliance on Health & Pollution GAHP, Waste Management Authority WMA, Waste Management Society of Nigeria WMSN, Federal & State Ministry of Environment FSME, Friends of the Environment Nigeria FEN, Environment Protection Agency EPA, National Environmental Standards and Regulations Enforcement Agency NESREA, Environmental Health Council of Nigeria EHCON, National Biosafety Management Agency NBMA, etc to achieve our target goals.

05.08 Justification de mon projet

Although there are very few players in the Abattoir Wastes Recycling sector in Nigeria, the products that will be produced by this project already have similar products from many Agric-related companies in Nigeria. There are local and foreign products currently in use for livestock feed, poultry feed, pet supplement, manure, fertilizer, and biogas energy source. However, this project will major on recycling of abattoir or animal farm wastes to produce better competitive products that are much more affordable. With a goal to improve environmental sustainability, wastes from these sources can be exchanged for our products. Animal waste rendering is not a rampant business in Nigeria but it’s not entirely new technology either, so are the products from this project. We will make use of current local & foreign technologies for a start then research, and on the long run, create innovative technological solutions.

The Agriculture sector in Nigeria is very lucrative so there are lots of existing products catering for manure, fertilizer, animal feeds, and so much more but the deficit is also large enough for newcomers like us. Although the biogas sector is not yet explored, the manure/fertilizer & animal feed sector is also not yet fully exploited. Competitive products from companies like CHI Farms, Zartech Limited, Notore Chemical Industry, Livestock Feeds PLC, Flour Mills of Nigeria, Solar Sister, Green Energy & Biofuels, Ajaokuta Steel Company, BIC Farms Concepts, Songhai Farms, and lots of local companies are available but most of them do not major on waste recycling and environmental sustainability which are our own strength. Starting with acquiring wastes from these companies especially animal wastes, we will grow to become a household name for anything animal waste recycling. We will edge out our competitors by creating varieties of affordable products that are both new and substitutes.

10.06 Menez-vous des actions au sein de votre communauté pour promouvoir le rôle des femmes entrepreneurs ?

I own a small shop business in a university in Lagos (Lagos State University of Education) where I offer gadgets charging, stationery sales, education consultancy, and business ideation. Most of my clients are females and I encourage them on how to start their own businesses like mine. When given business ideation assignments, students who have come to me for ideas and a test of their ideas have mostly been females and after a lengthy discussion of these ideas as solutions to their assignments, I make them understand that they must have a business of theirs no matter how small. Some who have yielded to my opinion are now suppliers of household products like liquid dishwashers, kitchen utensils & accessories, health supplements, peanuts, cloths, etc. I have also given 3 poor single mothers hundreds of thousands of naira to start their own business (hair dressing, cooked food selling, and fashion design). All these are toward the promotion of female entrepreneurs in my community.
