FOSS FUSION is a business idea where used clothes that become waste are shredded into unique raw materials that are used to make eco-friendly products such as mattresses for hospitals, eco-friendly furniture, and cushions, and studio insulation units.
01.01 Décrivez votre projet en détail
Ghana imports a substantial amount of used clothing each year, making it one of the largest importers of secondhand clothing globally. In 2020, Ghana imported over $180 million worth of used clothing, with significant contributions from countries like the United States, the UK, China, Germany, and South Korea (Forbes Africa) (DW). The UK's contribution alone in 2020 was approximately $70 million, accounting for a significant portion of Ghana's imports (Citi News Ghana). This influx of secondhand clothing has both economic and environmental implications. While it supports the livelihoods of thousands of traders in markets like Accra's Kantamanto, where over 30,000 traders work, it also leads to significant waste issues. Around 40% of imported clothing is deemed unsellable and ends up in landfills or polluting water bodies (Forbes Africa) (DW). FOSS FUSION is building a shredding machine that shreds used clothes into unique material for eco-friendly products.
01.02 Quel est le problème principal que vous essayez de résoudre ?
Ghana sometimes is the largest or second-largest importer of used clothes with 40% of what is coming into the country already wasted and not good enough to be worn. These used clothes quickly become waste materials and get left in the environment and landfills polluting our beachfronts thereby destroying nestling grounds for turtles and destroying tourism spaces along our coast. The used clothes also end up in landfills in the country with these landfills catching fire and causing respiratory problems for children and others. There is also no effective recovery program around waste and used clothes making them not readily accessible to production houses that can turn them into new products and keep them out of the environment.
01.03 Dites-nous quels sont les principaux avantages et/ou bénéfices de l'utilisation du produit/service que vous souhaitez fournir par votre projet (au moins 3).
1. Shredding clothes and repurposing the material for products like mattresses significantly reduces the volume of textile waste that ends up in landfills. Textile waste in landfills can release harmful chemicals and dyes into the environment. Recycling these materials mitigates this pollution. 2. By using shredded clothes as raw material, the demand for virgin materials (such as cotton or synthetic fibers) is reduced, conserving natural resources. Recycling textiles typically requires less energy compared to manufacturing new fibers from raw materials, leading to lower greenhouse gas emissions. 3. The textile industry is a major contributor to global carbon emissions. Recycling textiles into products like mattresses helps decrease the industry's carbon footprint by reducing the need for energy-intensive manufacturing processes.
