DROP-IT-OFF is a transformative project in Accra and Kumasi, using a mobile app to improve plastic waste management. Our aim is to empower 7,000 women, girls, and youth to earn sustainable income through plastic waste aggregation and sales. The app will create a network of drop-off points for households and businesses to easily recycle plastic waste. By connecting users and recycling companies, we streamline waste recovery. The project targets recovering 10,000 tons of recyclable plastic waste annually, generating over $700,000 in revenue. It will increase women's earnings in the recycling sector by 75%, reduce plastic pollution, and develop a replicable model for other African countries.

01.02 Quel est le problème principal que vous essayez de résoudre ?

The main problem we are addressing is the significant challenge faced by women working in the waste sector in Zimbabwe Despite making up 63% of the workforce, these women, often single mothers with dependents, earn the least and work in hazardous conditions on un-engineered landfills. They are exposed to poisonous smoke, methane gas emissions, and other dangers while recovering contaminated waste, resulting in minimal earnings. Additionally, there is no effective waste recovery program for households and companies to pass on their plastic waste for recycling. This situation exacerbates plastic pollution, contributes to climate crisis complications, and causes displacement due to flooding. Our project aims to create a sustainable income stream, reduce environmental hazards, and improve overall waste management through a comprehensive, app-based solution.

Environmental Impact: By recovering 10,000 tons of clean, recyclable plastic waste yearly, our project will keep substantial plastic waste out of the environment. This will help mitigate the effects of plastic pollution, reduce flooding risks, and contribute to a cleaner, safer community. Innovative Technology Integration: The DROP-IT-OFF mobile app allows for efficient waste management by connecting households, companies, and recycling facilities. It streamlines the process of waste collection and sales, reduces the recovery costs for recycling companies by 40%, and provides data for continuous improvement and funding opportunities.
