Fatyela Enviro Works is an environmental management company that is based in Cape Town (South Africa), the company was founded by Thandisile Fatyela; a Social Environmentalist by profession. The company offers garden services, vegetation management, travel management and training support management. We are driven by our vision "To achieve and promote sustainability principles for the benefit of the people, planet and profit." We can only achieve this by ensuring that we minimize our impact towards the environment, and we have always employed local people to improve the livelihood of our local people through job creation. In overall what we want to achieve through our missiion statement is that "...we are committed to work globally in fostering partnerships with businesses, community leaders, community organisations, government in all levels with a common goal to achieve and promote sustainability principles.". Our company has all the required skills, qualifications and expertise.

01.02 Quel est le problème principal que vous essayez de résoudre ?

South Africa has recorded a 32,9% of unemployment rate in the first quarter of 2024 and 45,5% of youth unemployment rate in the first quarter of 2024. This is a clear indication that our country is experiencing economic and social crisis. My business aims to create employment opportunities not only for youth but for women, youth and people over 35 years old. Since inception, my company has created at least 60 contract employment opportunities for local people where my business is currently located and they were people of different age groups, different genders and different race. This is a true reflection of the problem that my business is trying to solve, all of these people were employed through sub-contracts and contracts I had with Contour Enviro Group, CapeNature, Western Cape Department of Agriculture, Nature Connect and Heinrich Boell Foundation. Should my business get more long-term contracts, hundreds of people will be able to get job security and support their livelihood.

1. Vegetation Management Control and clearing of invasive alien plants in protected areas, it helps to protect and restore biodiversity of indigenous plants. It helps to prevent the spread of wildfires in biodiversity areas, private property by creating a firebelt or firebreak. It helps to allow the regrowth of indigenous plants without the disturbance caused by invasive alien plants. It helps to prevent water loss in water catchment areas as well as in rivers and wetlands. 2. Travel Management We help our clients by managing and coordinating their travel arrangements on their behalf and that saves them time and money (since the traveling is needs based not frequently). 3. Training Support We do learning programme facilitation as well as assessments of learning programmes. We provide learning programme support and mentorship to all learners that are part of the training programmes. We help our clients to save time and money as training mostly depends on need-based.

Through our Training Support Services we have trained over 30 learners in an accreditted nature conservation qualification. We have assessed and designed various learning programmes, my startup has contributed to this goal and we aim to contribute more as we are also in a process of getting skills programme accreditations with the relevant qualification body.

Through my startup we have employed at least 30% of women and 70% of men. We are slowly getting there to reach our target of 50% gender equality in my startup. In our educational programmes and training, our beneficiaries have been mostly 60% women and 40% men.

In my startup we are for employment creation, we have employed over 60 people since we started operating the business. Even though some of the contracts were short period, at least we contributed to decent work and on economic growth. We are still committed in creating more jobs as we work towards getting more contracts to our potential clients.

We have challenged the status quo, most of our business activities require manual labour such as vegetation management where we work in forestry and cutting trees. We are happy that women have been actively participating in forestry work such as using chainsaw, bow saw and loppers in cutting of trees. Such work has always been regarded as men manual labour but women have been working hard in this spaced and they have proved that we need an equal society for all and reduce all inequalities at the workplace and this is what we have been pushing since we have opened our doors in business.

Through our environmental education programmes we have conducted environmental awareness training in schools for teachers and learners in three different provinces such as Western Cape, Eastern Cape and Northern Cape. This was done through the SA Climate Change Champs project as an implementation partner with other partner organisation (GreenCape).

Through our Vegetation Management we control and clear invasive alien plants that causes environmental disturbances in protected areas. We have helped to restore biodiversity in different nature reserves and protected areas. This was done to ensure that life on land was not threatened and disturbed.
