The project of methane generation and purification from biodegradable waste involves several key processes and objectives aimed at sustainable energy production. Feedstock Selection and Preparation: Biodegradable waste materials such as food scraps, agricultural residues, and organic municipal solid waste are selected based on their methane-producing potential. Anaerobic Digestion (AD): The selected biodegradable waste undergoes anaerobic digestion, a biological process where microorganisms break down organic matter in the absence of oxygen. This process produces methane (CH4) and carbon dioxide (CO2) as byproducts. Biogas Collection and Purification: The biogas generated from AD, consisting primarily of methane and CO2 along with trace gases, is collected. Purification techniques such as scrubbing or pressure swing adsorption are employed to remove CO2 and other impurities from the biogas, increasing the methane concentration to produce biomethane. Municipal solid waste is a major source of methane emissions, a greenhouse gas that has a global warming potential of 21 times more than carbon dioxide, a leading cause of climate change. At the global increase of municipal solid waste generated from an increasing global population, there is an increasing trend of methane emissions causing a massive destruction of the atmosphere and the environment at large.
