The aim is to improve the quality and safety of food and feeds through by encouraging voluntary compliance with national standards by facilitating the availability of affordable laboratory testing equipment, testing facilities (Minilab) and consultancy.

Mini Laboratory Tanzania Project (Minilab Tanzania) aims to improve the safety and quality of agricultural products (food and feeds) in Tanzania by ensuring access to affordable testing equipment, facilities, and consultancy. This will enable farmers, producers, and processors to voluntarily comply with standards and regulations superseding the food and feed sectors. Availability of affordable testing tools/equipment will not only enable the farmers, producers, and processors to test their products at their facilities but also encourage the quality and safety of their products, hence improving their business, protecting the health of the consumers, protecting the environment as well as allowing them to access more competitive export market. This will benefit the individual farmers, processors, and producers of food and feed and the national economy. Access to the testing equipment and facilities will monitor the process and ensure quality and safety

Tanzania's food and feed sector faces the challenge of unsafe and substandard feeds and foods in the market. This leads to the outbreak of food and feed incidences such as foodborne disease(aflatoxicosis), low yield, loss of business due to the rejection of food and feeds in local, regional, and international markets, and malnutrition of humans and animals. Access to the testing facility to the regulators and existing private laboratories has been challenging for most micro, small, and medium processors due to long application processes, high charges, and delays in test results, which make it difficult for them to make timely decisions in production and product development. Once the farmers, processors, and producers own their testing equipment and have unlimited access to testing facilities, it will lower the production cost and allow them to efficiently manage the product’s quality and safety before the regulators, ensuring compliance.

The major benefits of my products are: i. Promotion of quality and safety of food and feeds available in Tanzania. ii. Promotion of voluntary compliance to standards and regulations. iii. Promotion of business competitiveness and ensuring access to local, regional, and export markets. iv. Reduce production costs by lowering the testing cost for farmers, producers, and processors and maximizing profits. v. Protecting the environment and minimizing losses during production. Once the process is controlled, losses will be minimal, and the environment will be safe. vi. Strengthen the knowledge of farmers, processors, and producers of food and feeds

The target beneficiaries are; • Farmers • Small and Medium Enterprises such as food and feed processors and distributors • Food and Feed transporters • Food and Feed retailers Farmers will manage the quality and safety of food and feed by implementing good pre-harvest practices. To begin with, farmers will have access to testing equipment/tools, such as a soil tester, which will enable them to check soil pH, texture, mineral composition, and humidity. Other testing tools/equipment supplied will allow them to check other agricultural inputs, such as the quality of seeds, fertilizers, etc. Small and Medium Enterprises, such as food and feed processors and distributors, will have access to simple and affordable tools/ equipment, such as pH meters, refractometers, hygrometers, thermometers, moisture analyzers, etc., to monitor production processes and ensure the quality and safety products.

Minilab Tanzania Project will help fight poverty by creating jobs and supporting food and feed producers in accessing the existing local and export markets. Our clients will access the market by producing competitive and safe products. We will promote trade and business through our project’s website and social media as marketing tools. Our social media and websites will be used to promote the work of our business partners with Minilab Tanzania. Farmers and processors can remain impoverished if they cannot access promising markets or if their products do not fetch reasonable prices. My project will ensure that farmers, processors, and producers of high-quality and safe products receive sufficient exposure through our social media and website. Minilab Tanzania will also contribute to the fight against poverty by creating job opportunities for local inhabitants. As the business expands, we will open more branches, requiring us to employ workers.

Minilab Tanzania Projects will help fight hunger by enhancing food and nutritional security and minimizing post-harvest losses during processing, storage, and distribution. This will be achieved by implementing proper transportation, storage, and distribution monitoring procedures to reduce food losses. Additionally, providing affordable laboratory testing equipment will enable processors, producers, and distributors of food and feeds to monitor the processes, ensuring the quality and safety of the end products. Unmonitored processes in many Tanzanian factories have led to significant post-harvest food losses due to spoilage, reduced shelf life, and the regulators' confiscation of low-quality and unsafe food and feeds. By ensuring the safe production and handling of food and feeds throughout the value chain, we can provide high-quality and safe products to consumers, reducing the community's hunger risk.

The availability of safe food and feeds will protect the community from public health incidents and help achieve a good standard of health. The Minilab Project will facilitate society's good health and well-being by training processors and distributors to use testing equipment and results to monitor manufacturing processes, distribution, and storage. Cereal and cereal products will be the focus of our pilot implementation as they are staple foods widely consumed by Tanzanians. These products are highly susceptible to mold infestation, leading to aflatoxin contamination. We will ensure that processors and producers can access affordable moisture and aflatoxin analysis tools to protect consumer health.

The project will also allow young university professionals to be trained and attached through field practical training. This will enable them to learn the practical application of what they have learned in their courses, especially in laboratory testing, food and feed safety quality assurance, and quality management.

Create an environment where everyone feels valued and respected, regardless of gender, by encouraging open communication and actively listening to diverse perspectives. iii. The Minilab Tanzania Project will support clean water and sanitation access by providing laboratory testing tools and equipment. These tools will allow processors to assess the quality and safety of water used in production and processing. Examples of testing tools include pH meters, Chlorine testers, TDS Meters, Conductivity Meters, and Rapid Microbiological Test Kits. These tools are available for sale to farmers, producers, processors, regulators, and individuals interested in ensuring the quality and safety of their water. By making testing equipment available and accessible, the community can verify the quality and safety of the water they consume, protecting themselves from consuming contaminated and unsafe water. Processors can also monitor and manage water quality during production, ensuring the quality and safety of their products. Furthermore, the testing tools and equipment will be used to assess the quality of wastewater before discharge into the environment.

The Minilab Project will also engage in ongoing clean energy initiatives supported by the other development parties and provide training to the community on the importance of opting for clean energy and supporting environmental protection

This will enable innovators to develop innovative solutions for the existing challenges in the food and feed sector. Collaborative decision-making by involving marginalized groups and underrepresented groups, women, people of color, LGBTQ+ individuals, and people with disabilities.

Improper waste management greatly contributes to environmental pollution and ozone layer degradation. Equipment that can help check the waste's qualities includes a pH meter, a Turbidity meter, and a chlorine meter.

The establishment of mini-labs and the supply of testing tools and equipment through renting and purchasing will improve existing products and services by addressing needs that still need to be met by other institutions or organizations. Current service providers mainly target medium and large industries. However, due to high charges and bureaucracy, most micro and small producers and processors need help to afford these services. Minilab Tanzania aims to provide an affordable and user-friendly solution to enable small and micro enterprises to enhance the quality and safety of food and feed.

05.09 Qui sont vos principaux potentiels concurrents et qu'est-ce qui vous différencie d'eux ?

The main competitors are the private laboratories, which are still very few, and government laboratories that are highly focused on the already developed food and feed industries. Our products and services will be focused on micro, small, and medium enterprises, which have a high demand for the services which Minilab Tanzania will offer.

Minilab Tanzania Project promotes the role of female entrepreneurs by promoting equality and gender diversity by allowing both women and men to access services and products. My three years of experience have made me realise that the majority of my customers are women who own micro and small enterprises. We normally support the women by ensuring we deliver the best services which are focused on time delivery and value for money.
