SUNWAVE Ltd is a pioneering sustainable energy startup company based in Tanzania, leveraging solar energy to address the critical issue of post harvest losses for small scale fishers and sellers.

At SUNWAVE, we offer solar-powered ice-making units to small-scale fishers and sellers as a service. This is to help them preserve their catch and access markets more efficiently. By leveraging solar energy, we provide sustainable and reliable ice production independent of the grid, addressing post-harvest losses even in remote areas.

Small-scale fishers and sellers in Tanzania face significant challenges, with up to 70% post-harvest losses. The main issues including inadequate ice supply, indigenous cold storage and poor handling practices. These factors contribute to income insecurity and reduced profits for millions of people. According to our surveys and interviews at the fish markets, 85% of respondents expressed difficulties in obtaining ice consistently. 90% showed willingness to adopt a solution that improves fish preservation.

By extending storage duration for fish and reducing spoilage, our solar-powered ice machines contribute to the resilience of communities in blue and green spaces by reducing IUU and the use of poor current alternatives. This will ensure more fish reach the market, improving food security and economic stability.

Behind this innovative solution is our dedicated team. I, Shamim, the CEO, experienced in Sustainable Blue Economy, Climate Finance, and International Policy. I fundraised $300k for "Made by Africraft" in 2021. Tatiana, the COO, designed the Uganics warehouse funded by Johnson & Johnson, raised $200k for Kimuli Collections during COVID-19, and grew Wandar Village to an exit by selling the solution to Uganda's Tourism Lead Amos Wekesa in 2022 and Ridhiwan, our CTO, is experienced in Software Development, Data Science, and Computational Chemistry, having developed the Mapindi App used by thousands of students and Smart-Taka, being adopted by PETPro. Together, we are committed to making a positive impact on the fishing industry in Tanzania.

Our solar-powered ice makers are uniquely suited to the needs of small-scale fishers and sellers in Tanzania by providing a reliable, sustainable solution to preserve fish in remote, off-grid areas. Unlike traditional ice-making methods that rely on costly and polluting diesel generators, our system harnesses abundant solar energy, reducing operational costs and environmental impact. This innovation not only extends the shelf-life of fish, enhancing food security and income stability, but also promotes economic resilience. The technology is tailored to local conditions, easy to maintain, and supports the livelihoods of fishing communities by ensuring a consistent, high-quality supply of fresh fish.

Our main competitors are industries that make ice blocks, shops and people that freeze ice in plastic bags for sell. Our ice is food grade compared to our competitors and it is produced in shapes and purity that makes it last longer compared to our competitors.

10.06 Menez-vous des actions au sein de votre communauté pour promouvoir le rôle des femmes entrepreneurs ?

Yes. I work with 31 female entrepreneurs from Bagamoyo Entrepreneurs to co-design and co-create innovative ocean climate solutions to improve their business. These women grow seaweed, they do fishing as well as Sea Cucumber farming. I connect them to markets and individuals interested in their products and we also do packaging together. I do all this through Tanzania Ocean Climate Innovation Hub under endorsed by the UN Ocean Decade as part of GEOS Program under Ocean Visions.
