Describe your project or startup in a few words
Mushrooms are very nutritious products that can be cultivated indoor using lignocellulosic waste materials. The aim of this project is sustainable farming practices by growing oyster mushroom in a controlled environment and organic substrates.
01.01 Describe your project in more detail
This project is mainly focused on cultivation of oyster mushroom starting from spawn production to fruiting body in a controlled environment. The spawn will be produced using sterilized grains such as wheat and barly which are used as a carrier of the mycelium of the fungi(mushroom). After colonization of mycelium with in 2 weeks it will be ready for inoculation on organic waste materials such as sugarcane bagas, wheat and teff straw that can be easily available. The production follows proper sterilization techniques by applying steam sterilization method inorde to make the substrate free from contamination. After inoculating the spaw on the substrate in sterilized bucket, we will make the room dark since it needs dark environment for 3 weeks inorder to produce a mycelium. After that we will give a light source, water and air ventilation for the production of high quality and quantity mushroom to supply for restaurants and supermarkets. Finally the waste will be used as animal feed.
01.02 What is the main problem you are trying to solve?
This project Use Mushrooms to Solve different Community Challenges such as:- 1.Nutritious Food and Medicine:- Many communities face malnutrition and lack access to healthy foods. Mushroom cultivation, offers a great opportunities to address food security issues and used as powerful medicines, supporting a healthy immune system, lowering cholesterol, and fighting cancer cell development, among a long list of other medical attributes. 2.Production Systems are Low-Tech, Easy to Set Up, and Flexible:-Mushroom can grown in a closet without the need of land like other crops and vegetables . The space needs to be kept at a consistent temperature. Also because of the flexibility and low cost of setting up production systems, along with the main raw input of low cost waste materials, the cost to start an operation is low. 3.Recycle Local Waste :- Mushrooms will consume almost anything that is high in carbon. Post-production mushroom substrates used as compost and as animal feed.
01.03 Tell us the major benefits and/or advantages of using the product/service that your project intends to provide (at least 3).
1. Source of vitamin D:- Mushrooms are one of the non-animal sources of vitamin D. 2. Contain immune modulating nutrients:-Mushrooms contain active polysaccharides, one of which is a type of soluble fibre called beta-glucan. This compound activates parts of our immune system, including immune cells called natural killer cells and macrophages, and by so doing it increases our body’s ability to fight infection. 3. May be helpful in maintaining heart health:- Mushrooms have been shown to have some therapeutic properties that may help lower cholesterol, particularly in overweight adults. 4. May support gut health:-Compounds in mushrooms, including beta glucan, appear to act as prebiotics, fuelling the growth of beneficial gut bacteria and promoting a favourable gut environment. This is important because a healthy gut plays an important role in maintaining our immune defences, digesting our food as well as communicating with the brain through nerves and hormones.

02.07.02 Affordable and clean energy - Justification
The industry of mushroom cultivation uses a wide variety of lignocellulosic waste and is considered a very efficient way to recycle agro-residues and to produce food. This activity generates tons of spent mushroom substrate (SMS) every year. The SMS is a useful resource for the generation of biogas, since raw material is digested by the metabolism of fungi, performing as a pre-treatment, thus facilitating the subsequent anaerobic digestion and increasing the yield of methane production. The potential production of methane using SMS pre-treated with cultivated mushrooms should be added to the list of other common residues used, such as food/vegetable waste and pig manure. Biogas can be used as fuel, and the residues from biogas can be used as fertilizers for food crops. These productive activities can be integrated in a virtuous circle of reuse of organic resources; in which the waste of one activity is used as a substrate for another activity.
