The main problem that SolarMekes aims to solve is the manual and labor-intensive process of cutting onion roots and leaves during onion harvesting in Ethiopia. The current method is tedious, time-consuming, and requires a large number of laborers. The introduction of SolarMekes machine addresses this issue by automatically cutting the roots and leaves of the onion, which reduces the burden on farmers, decreases labor costs, and improves overall efficiency and productivity in onion farming. The machine's primary purpose is to streamline the root and leaf cutting process, making it faster, easier, and more cost-effective for smallholder farmers in Ethiopia. Additionally, the project benefits other stakeholders in the onion value chain, including onion processors, exporters, and consumers.
