Describe your project or startup in a few words
It is an online legal marketplace empowering businesses, individuals, and the legal community in Ethiopia by providing affordable access to standardized legal resources, enabling lawyers to monetize their expertise, and fostering a collaborative ecosystem
01.01 Describe your project in more detail
LegalMart is an innovative startup based in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia that aims to revolutionize legal services and resources in the country. Founded in 2024 by Ansar Sherif, it is an online marketplace that serves as a platform for legal professionals to list and sell their self-created digital legal resources, such as document templates, online courses, and research reports. At the same time, LegalMart empowers small businesses, entrepreneurs, and individuals by providing them affordable and easy access to these essential legal tools and information, addressing the challenges they face in navigating the legal landscape. Beyond the core marketplace, LegalMart also fosters collaboration and knowledge sharing within the legal community through features like discussion forums and networking events. The startup's vision is to create a more inclusive, empowered, and transparent legal ecosystem in Ethiopia that supports business growth and access to justice with a clear mission.
01.02 What is the main problem you are trying to solve?
The main problem that LegalMart is trying to solve is the lack of affordable and accessible legal resources and services for small businesses, entrepreneurs, and individuals in Ethiopia. Despite the vital role that the legal system plays in business operations, many startups and SMEs struggle to obtain the necessary legal documents, templates, and guidance required to establish and grow their ventures. At the same time, LegalMart recognizes that legal professionals, particularly lawyers and law firms, often create valuable intellectual property, such as document templates, research reports, and online courses, as part of their practice. However, there is no centralized and efficient channel for these legal experts to monetize and leverage their expertise digitally. Thus, by creating an online marketplace platform, it aims to bridge this gap and empower both sides of the legal equation.
01.03 Tell us the major benefits and/or advantages of using the product/service that your project intends to provide (at least 3).
Well, the major benefits of using the LegalMart platform: • Improved access to affordable, standardized legal information and services. By creating a centralized online marketplace, LegalMart will make it easier for small businesses and individuals to obtain essential legal documents, templates, and guides to address their everyday legal needs at affordable prices. • Facilitation of monetization of legal expertise. LegalMart will provide a platform for lawyers and law firms to commercialize the intellectual property they create as part of their practice, such as document templates, research reports, and online courses, thereby unlocking a new revenue stream. • Addressing the need for ongoing legal education and training. The platform will offer a range of online legal courses and virtual training programs, enabling lawyers to fulfill their continuing education requirements and stay up-to-date with evolving legal trends and compliance needs.
01.04 Please describe who exactly your project is aimed at serving. Who are the targeted beneficiaries?
Small businesses, entrepreneurs and individuals who need access to standardized legal documents, templates and guides to address their everyday legal needs at affordable prices. As well as lawyers and law firms who can monetize their legal expertise and intellectual property through listing documents, courses and reports on the platform; and legal professionals wanting continuing education resources. Thus, it aims to serve these target customer segments by improving access to justice and creating new professional opportunities.

h) IT (digital services, equipment and software)
02.01.01 My project contributes to the No poverty goal
7 - Strongly Agree
02.01.02 No poverty - Justification
Our LegalMart project directly contributes to reducing poverty in Ethiopia in several key ways. One by creating an online marketplace for legal resources, we aim to improve access to affordable services for low-income individuals and small businesses which inturn supports economic empowerment and growth without financial barriers. It also generates new professional opportunities for lawyers to commercialize their skills. Thus, by fostering collaboration in the legal sector, our platform could create more jobs while strengthening legal awareness. Therefore, through enhancing access to justice and promoting entrepreneurship, we believe LegalMart has the potential to lift communities out of poverty by enabling economic participation for all.
02.02.01 My project contributes to the Zero hunger goal
5
02.02.02 Zero hunger - Justification
While our LegalMart project was not initially conceived to directly address food insecurity issues, through fostering inclusive entrepreneurship and access to legal empowerment tools, we believe positive impacts on zero hunger could emerge over time. Thus, by strengthening the small business ecosystem, more agri-focused ventures may obtain the compliance guidance needed to participate in fair trade. Additionally, the legal awareness raised could benefit farmer cooperatives seeking to formally organize their operations. As the online marketplace expands across Ethiopia, including rural regions, it may aid the sharing of best agricultural practices that lift yields. Ultimately, by supporting an equitable, thriving economy, LegalMart may play an indirect role in enhancing household incomes and communities' ability to obtain nutritious diets.
02.03.01 My project contributes to the Good health and well-being goal
5
02.03.02 Good health and well-being - Justification
While our LegalMart project was not initially aimed at direct healthcare initiatives, there are ways improving access to legal resources could positively influence well-being over time. By providing affordable tools and education enabling small businesses to formalize operations, livelihood opportunities may expand which in turn could lift household incomes assisting with basic needs attainment. Similarly, fostering collaboration across various industries, including healthcare compliance, could indirectly strengthen community health through open knowledge sharing. And as legal guidance supports various sectors' sustainable growth, it may aid public health priorities like sanitation. Thus, contributing to balanced development that empowers people economically forms ground work for holistic wellness promotion.
02.04.01 My project contributes to the Quality education goal
5
02.04.02 Quality education - Justification
While not aimed at direct education delivery, our LegalMart project supports quality, equitable learning opportunities through several means. One by developing an online platform for legal courses and training, we expand access to professional development resources regardless of location. This directly promotes lifelong learning. The platform also raises awareness of common legal issues facing the public and businesses. In so doing, it can empower users with basic legal knowledge to better understand their rights and comply with regulations. By extension, this basic ‘education’ may indirectly strengthen communities and participation in society over the long run. Ultimately, through the diverse skills training and information shared online, LegalMart contributes to an inclusive, knowledgeable population capable of reaching their full potential.
02.05.01 My project contributes to the Gender equality goal
6
02.05.02 Gender equality - Justification
While our LegalMart platform was not conceived with the sole aim of promoting gender equality, there are meaningful ways it could empower women and girls. One by leveling access to legal guidance resources through online and mobile delivery, more females—especially those in remote areas—gain exposure to knowledge helping them understand and advocate for their rights. This may embolden greater participation in society and business. The e-marketplace model also creates new economic opportunities for all lawyers, including women, to commercialize their expertise and experience greater professional autonomy. Additionally, fostering open collaboration online presents networking prospects that can aid career progression regardless of gender. Thus, through legal empowerment and skills-sharing, LegalMart aims to establish an inclusive platform strengthening society through equal opportunity and treatment of all.
02.06.01 My project contributes to the Clean water and sanitation goal
4
02.06.02 Clean water and sanitation - Justification
While our LegalMart project was not designed explicitly to focus on water and sanitation issues, there remain potential indirect ways its services could later support related progress. If the platform facilitated training or partnerships that strengthened understanding of regulations pertaining to regional sanitation infrastructure and its community impacts, healthier living standards may result. Over time, as small businesses and local cooperatives gain access to legal resources enabling sustainable operations, better waste management could follow for towns. As businesses and non-profits use our marketplace to share knowledge of local sanitation best practices with others, it may moderately influence public perceptions and buy-in for hygienic solutions. With additional content focusing on water/sanitation, LegalMart could at least raise awareness to need for responsible access and management of these resources.
02.07.01 My project contributes to the Affordable and clean energy goal
4
02.07.02 Affordable and clean energy - Justification
While our LegalMart project was not designed with the direct aim of expanding access to clean energy or improving sector regulations, there remain possible long-term influences. As an online legal resource hub, over time the platform could feature specialized content helping small businesses understand compliance needs for setup and operation of sustainable energy solutions, from installation standards to incentives programs. Basic guidance may encourage affordable tech adoption. Partnering with energy non-profits to share educational materials could raise demand for modern alternatives. Furthermore, if the marketplace strengthened rural economic participation overall through legal empowerment, growing household incomes may eventually facilitate investment in cleaner home solutions. With potential to influence sectors indirectly, LegalMart could play a small supportive role in the transition to renewable options.
02.08.01 My project contributes to the Decent work and economic growth
6
02.08.02 Decent work and economic growth - Justification
Our LegalMart project was directly conceived to boost inclusive, sustainable economic growth and quality job opportunities through several means. One is by developing an online marketplace, we aim to give lawyers and firms a new revenue stream by commercializing their specialist legal services, forms, courses and advice - promoting dignified, productive self-employment. Simultaneously, reduced barriers to accessing affordable, basic legal tools empowers entrepreneurs to formalize ventures and participate in fair, growing markets. Our platform also strengthens collaboration between industry and educational institutions to connect jobseekers with skills training promoting long-term employability. In so doing, we believe equitable, decentralized participation across communities can swell the number engaged in decent work nationwide. Therefore, LegalMart serves the core purpose of sparking balanced business development and livelihood progress for all.
02.09.01 My project contributes to the Industry innovation and infrastructure
6
02.09.02 Industry innovation and infrastructure - Justification
Our project was conceptualized to directly strengthen innovation and resilient industry growth in multiple ways. By developing an innovative blockchain-based digital marketplace platform integrating various online and mobile-friendly services, we aim to establish modern technological infrastructure promoting sustainable business networks nationally. Simultaneously, our legal training and capacity building resources empower small companies to formally integrate supply chains and scale operations. By incentivizing skill-sharing collaboration between legal firms, startups and technical training institutions, it fosters ideas and partnerships supporting inclusive industrial progress. Thus, boosting sustainable entrepreneurship means more job opportunities arise from new innovations emerging within a fair, conducive economic environment. Thus, through cutting-edge solutions and legal empowerment, our venture advances strategic infrastructure development driving whole-sector transformation.
02.10.01 My project contributes to the Reduced inequalities goal
6
02.10.02 Reduced inequalities - Justification
A core aim of our project is to directly address inequalities by improving equitable access to legal knowledge and services. By developing an online marketplace providing standardized, affordable resources nationwide, we reduce barriers traditionally preventing low-income and remote users from obtaining basic commercial and civil guidance. This empowerment can help boost participation across society, including among often marginalized groups. Our platform also levels opportunities for lawyers anywhere to expand their client base and experience through a digitized network. By facilitating skills-sharing collaboration between professionals and learners, regional gaps in specialized resources may shrink as well. Thus, in striving to foster an inclusive environment where all community members can pursue dignified livelihoods and justice, our venture meaningfully contributes to a fairer future with fewer disparities.
02.11.01 My project contributes to the Sustainable cities and communities goal
5
02.11.02 Sustainable cities and communities - Justification
While our LegalMart project was not designed explicitly to focus on urban development issues, there remain possible indirect ways its services could later support more sustainable municipalities. As reliable access to basic commercial legal resources empowers equitable small business growth across sectors, local job markets may strengthen, retaining skilled talent within communities. This could aid long-term planning efforts. Should the e-marketplace one day offer localized content on property development regulations or share best practices for neighborhood infrastructure projects, it may lift standards of living. Partnerships promoting specialized legal training relevant for public health officials or waste managers may also modestly improve city service quality. With time, stronger local economies and awareness of compliance topics could flow into upgrades enhancing residents' safety, resilience and quality of life.
02.12.01 My project contributes to the Responsible consumption and production goal
5
02.12.02 Responsible consumption and production - Justification
While not directly aimed at effecting consumption habits or industry recycling initiatives, our project maintains potential to positively influence sustainable resource use through promoting informed,rules-based commercial activities over the long term. As an online compliance education hub,it could offer training on pertinent production regulations for reducing toxins or waste. And by strengthening small businesses' participation in above-board markets, communities may witness spillover benefits like standardized packaging/labelling adherence. If our platform one day hosts collaborations where industrial peers brainstorm Circular Economy models, awareness could grow. Partnerships informing youth on compliance issues may instill responsible consumption values. Thus, by helping establish an equitable, regulated business environment driven by shared knowledge, our marketplace lays groundwork supporting greener growth aligned with this goal.
02.13.01 My project contributes to the Climate action goal
5
02.13.02 Climate action - Justification
Our project was not designed with the chief aim of directly addressing climate change impacts or supporting renewable policies. However, there remain possible indirect alignments emerging over the long term. As an online information hub, the platform could develop content raising awareness of existing regulations governing sustainable practices within relevant sectors like construction, energy or transportation. Partnering with environmental non-profits to share educational materials may also lift public understanding of issues. Furthermore, if the marketplace strengthens sustained entrepreneurship and economic participation locally, growing incomes may eventually facilitate households' investments in clean technologies or carbon offset programs. With additional specialized training down the line, LegalMart could play a small supportive role in environmentally-conscious development. Therefore, potential remains to empower activity conducive to climate action goals.
02.14.01 My project contributes to the Life below water goal
3
02.14.02 Life below water - Justification
Our project was conceived with the aim of expanding access to core commercial legal services and resources, not explicitly tackling ocean conservation issues. As an online compliance information hub, the platform does not focus programming or partnerships around sustainably managing marine environments and resources. While strengthened small business participation in fair markets brought about through legal empowerment may produce some tangential economic benefits for coastal communities reliant on fisheries, the startup itself was not designed to influence fishing/aquaculture practices, protect coastal ecosystems, curb ocean pollution or address climate change's watery impacts. Unless we directly engage maritime sectors and environmental agencies to develop specialized content or compliance training, LegalMart's service offerings do not align with effecting positive change targeted towards life under seas and oceans.
02.15.01 My project contributes to the Life on land goal
4
02.15.02 Life on land - Justification
Our LegalMart platform was not designed explicitly to focus on conservation of terrestrial environments and biodiversity. However, there remain possible indirect alignments over the long term. Should the marketplace one day host specialized training on compliance pertaining to sustainable land-use or forestry practices, smallholder awareness may lift. Partnerships providing educational materials supporting regulated use of ecosystems could also help. If the e-market strengthens equitable rural entrepreneurship and livelihoods through access to legal tools, local pressures on unstable land for short-term income may lessen. Communities retaining healthy environmentslong-term potentially see indirect benefits too. With addition of targeted programming plus scaled economic empowerment, LegalMart could play a small supportive role. However, direct engagement of conservation agencies would better optimize contributions towards protecting life on land.
02.16.01 My project contributes to the Peace justice and strong institutions goal
7 - Strongly Agree
02.16.02 Peace justice and strong institutions - Justification
Our LegalMart project fosters inclusive, just institutions by offering an online marketplace for affordable specialized legal services, forms, guidance, and classes. We break down barriers for underserved communities, promoting cohesive societies. Collaborative partnerships among practitioners, justice bodies, and learners spread upstanding standards and oversight. Our platform incentivizes localized expertise sharing, enhancing compliance awareness nationwide and driving progress toward sustainable development founded on accountability and social inclusion.
02.17.01 My project contributes to the Partnerships for the goal
6
02.17.02 Partnerships for the goal - Justification
A core design principle of our LegalMart project is to directly enable impactful cross-sector collaborations promoting sustainable development. By establishing an openly accessible digital marketplace where legal practitioners, educational institutions, social enterprises and professional associations can partner to share specialized services, training programs and civic insights nationwide, our systems aim to systematically strengthen cooperating networks. This approach incentivizes public-private mobilization of skills and resources to spread opportunities. Partnerships forged through skills-sharing arrangements on our platform may also seed further cooperation addressing local development issues. By cultivating an inclusive environment empowering entrepreneurship across communities, our work directly supports revitalizing multi-level strategic partnerships driving systematic progress on interlinked global goals.

7 - Strongly Agree
05.07 The product/service we envision creating is a new version of an old product/service.
6
05.08 Justification
While online legal services exist, we believe LegalMart introduces key advantages. By developing as a centralized marketplace connecting lawyers nationally, we streamline fragmented assistance into a unified, affordable platform. This spreads expertise to underserved communities previously with high physical access barriers. By incorporating educational programs and expertise-sharing between legal experts and institutions, our approach cultivates ongoing professional development extending impact. Partnerships mapping compliance issues onto a national stage through insights-sharing likewise seeds innovation. Integrating affordability and unbundled services untaps demand for flexible guidance beyond crisis response. Our consolidated e-market model prioritizes cooperation to strengthen an educated marketplace through technology, uniquely extending access.
05.09 Who are your main potential competitors and what makes you stand out from them?
Our main potential competitors would be the small number of online and offline legal services that currently exist to connect clients to lawyers. However, we stand out by having a specific focus on using technology to expand access to legal assistance, especially for underserved groups. By building an online marketplace and incorporating legal education resources, we aim to systematically increase access beyond just major urban areas. We plan to work with legal professionals and community colleges across Ethiopia to share expertise between regions and help standardize training. Our integrated affordability features and payment plans would also make legal counsel more accessible for low-income individuals. Furthermore, as the first platform of our kind operating at a national scale in Ethiopia, we are uniquely positioned to help map compliance issues and connect lawyers across zones to build the legal sector in areas that currently lack adequate support.
10.06 Are you initiating actions within your community to promote the role of female entrepreneurs?
Yes, we plan to take a few actions to promote the role of female entrepreneurs within our community: Partner with organizations supporting women-owned businesses to feature and highlight successful female legal professionals using our platform. This can serve as inspiration. actively recruit female legal experts and Small Business Legal Clinics run by women's organizations to join our marketplace. Make their presence and expertise well-known. Host seminars and training programs focused on empowering women entrepreneurs through legal education. Talk about challenges faced and overcoming barriers through services like LegalMart. Create support groups and mentorship connections specifically for women seeking guidance starting their own businesses or nonprofit work. Leverage senior women leaders for guidance.
