01.01 Describe your startup in more detail

JLS Origin is a leading renewable energy, surveillance and smart technology company that provide renewable energy and smart solutions. We are renewable energy experts with positive attitude to climate change.

01.02 What is the main problem you are trying to solve?

About 80 percent of the world’s population uses energy that produces greenhouse gas emission from fossil fuels and releases carbon dioxide into the atmosphere causing air pollution and climate change. According to the World Bank Nigeria loses and wastes 40 percent of its total food production each year. It is estimated that 37 percent of Nigerian agricultural production that requires refrigeration is lost due to inefficient and unsustainable storage system. It is this aspect of the larger food security issue that the JLS Origin team is executing the project PORTABLE SOLAR COLD BOX <PSCB>.

Utilities, cooperatives, municipalities, and Fortune 500 companies buy wind and solar energy to power their operations, attracted by the clean energy economics and emissions-free generation. Our targeted beneficiaries also include homeowners, businesses and governments. Our Portable Solar Cold Box is targeted at farmers, food producers and retail outlets.

The impacts of climate change can worsen symptoms of many health conditions, such as heart disease, asthma and other lung conditions, and mental health. More frequent and intense weather events caused by climate change can lead to more emergency room visits, hospitalizations and deaths. Our startup aims at reducing Africa’s reliance on fossil fuels that release carbon dioxide into the atmosphere and causes climate change. We provide energy production options that produce no greenhouse gas emissions from fossil fuels and reduce some types of air pollution.

Our startup have an academy that offers solar training installations to all individuals, male and female alike. It is a six months program where we teach, train and equip participants to gain the technical know-how for successful solar system installations. The training involved both theory and practical hands-on approaches to the installation of solar panels and inverters. At the end of the program participants are given a Certificate of Participation and a Solar Kit, then they can start to build a career as renewable energy experts.

Climate change threatens the quality of source water through increased runoff of pollutants and sediment, decreased water availability from drought and saltwater intrusion, as well as adversely affecting overall efforts to maintain water quality. Heavy downpours are projected to increase due to climate change.
