Describe your project or startup in a few words
Foodimetric is health-tech startup with the vision of promoting the reality of healthiness by integrating technology to Africa's healthcare system. With her web application, Foodimetric provides reliable nutrition information and nutrition assessment.
01.01 Describe your startup in more detail
Foodimetric is a health tech startup devoted to promoting healthy living in Africa through tech and nutrition science. I conceived the idea during my final year in university and I teamed up with my friends to develop the web app within a year. Since our launch on April 1st, 2024, we have witnessed remarkable growth, with over 200 users relying on our service. Powdered by Nigerian Food Composition Database, the food and nutrient search features allow users to calculate dietary intake and easily go through nutrient content of foods. With the BMI calculator, users can determine their nutritional status (underweight, normal, overweight or obese), Through our featured articles and social media post, we educate our audience on nutrition. Next versions will integrate the West Africa Food Composition Database, more assessment tools and artificial intelligence for seamless assessment and consultancy by developing meal plan with local Africa foods and connecting dietitians with clients.
01.02 What is the main problem you are trying to solve?
The main problem Foodimetric is trying to solve is lack of access to accurate and reliable nutrition information and assessment software in Africa. In many African countries, including Nigeria, there is a significant gap in nutrition knowledge and dissemination of nutrition information. This has led to many health problems such as malnutrition, obesity, and related non communicable diseases (NCDs). “The growing burden of NCDs poses a grave threat to the health and lives of millions of people in Africa: over a third of deaths in the region are due to these illnesses.” - WHO Regional Director for Africa. Meanwhile, most NCDs are diet related. The startup is addressing this issue by providing, diet assessment tools for tracking health progress and making informed decisions, educating the public through enlightening nutrition articles and social media engagements. Soon, we will provide personalized consultancy services through artificial intelligence integration.
