01.01 Describe your startup in more detail

The Amayi Food Empowerment Initiative is dedicated to empowering women in Malawi through sustainable food processing and dehydration techniques. Our project focuses on training women to use locally available resources to reduce food waste and extend the shelf life of produce. The initiative promotes economic empowerment by providing women with the skills to produce and market value-added products such as dehydrated fruits and vegetables. This not only enhances their income but also fosters community resilience against climate challenges. Our ultimate goal is to create a network of empowered women and farmers who contribute to sustainable development and food security in their communities.

01.02 What is the main problem you are trying to solve?

The main problem we are addressing is the high post-harvest losses of fresh foods in Malawi, particularly tomatoes, mangoes, vegetables, and many fruits which are abundant during certain seasons. These losses are exacerbated by the lack of processing capacity currently in malawi and also lack of knowledge and skills among women, who are traditionally responsible for food handling in African culture, to add value to harvested produce. Additionally, the high cost of processing machinery makes it difficult for these women to utilize available resources effectively. Our project aims to reduce food waste and empower women by providing training in food processing and dehydration techniques using locally available resources.

Our startup provides several major benefits: 1. Reduced Food Loss: By utilizing dehydration and value addition techniques, we significantly reduce post-harvest losses of fresh produce like tomatoes, mangoes, and vegetables. 2. Value-Added Food Products:Our training and equipment enable women to transform raw produce into marketable, shelf-stable products, thereby increasing their economic value. 3. Economic Empowerment:By equipping women with the skills and resources to process and sell their products, we empower them economically, creating new income streams and improving livelihoods. 4. Climate Change Mitigation: Reducing food waste helps lower greenhouse gas emissions associated with decomposing organic matter, contributing to climate change mitigation. 5. Nutrition Improvement: Our project promotes the consumption of a variety of preserved and nutritious foods, enhancing food security and dietary diversity in the community.

Our startup’s product and services are aimed at serving two primary groups: 1. Women: We focus on empowering women, particularly those involved in food handling and processing. By providing training in dehydration and value addition techniques, we equip them with the skills needed to transform fresh produce into marketable products. This not only enhances their economic opportunities but also strengthens their role in the food supply chain. 2. Farmers: We target smallholder farmers who often experience high post-harvest losses due to the seasonal abundance of crops like tomatoes, mangoes, vegetables, and pears. By introducing affordable processing methods, we help farmers preserve their produce, reduce waste, and increase their income by selling value-added products. She is the proprietor of Creamy Dreamy Enterprise, a registered small-scale food processing business specializing in dairy processing, peanut butter production, and catering services. Her extensive knowledge in food science, coupled with hands-on experience in various facets of food processing, significantly contributes to our project's goal of empowering women farmers through innovative food preservation and value addition techniques. Her practical expertise and dedication to sustainable food systems make her an integral part of our leadership team.
