Our comprehensive training programs equip farmers with essential beekeeping skills, while community engagement fosters strong support networks. By facilitating market access, we ensure the profitability of honey production, driving economic empowerment and creating sustainable livelihoods. A unique feature of our initiative is the integration of AI-based beekeeping monitoring systems. These advanced technologies enable farmers to track hive health, optimize honey production, and manage environmental factors more effectively. Leveraging AI enhances productivity, ensures sustainability, and provides real-time insights for informed decision-making. we actively promote tree planting to restore and maintain local ecosystems.
01.02 What is the main problem you are trying to solve?
Lweya Honey Initiative aims to break the poverty cycle by commercializing honey and training youth and women in building beehives, while also initiating tree planting where shifting cultivation has occurred. Located in an area without nearby schools and limited healthcare facilities, the initiative recognizes the challenges faced by the community. By providing economic stability through beekeeping, we not only offer an alternative income source but also incentivize youth to stay in school rather than succumb to early marriage. Improved economic conditions will enable better access to education and healthcare, transforming the community's prospects for the better.

In rural areas lacking nearby schools and healthcare facilities, marginalized communities face economic challenges and limited opportunities for education and healthcare access. The Lweya Honey Initiative aims to address these issues by commercializing honey production, providing beekeeping training to youth and women, and promoting tree planting to restore ecosystems affected by shifting cultivation. Through comprehensive training programs, community engagement, and the integration of AI-based monitoring systems, we empower marginalized communities to generate sustainable income, access education, and healthcare, while also fostering environmental conservation. As a result, our initiative creates economic stability, promotes education and personal development, enhances healthcare accessibility, drives environmental conservation, and fosters overall community development and resilience.

Lweya Honey Initiative primarily aims to serve smallholder farmers, particularly women and youth, in rural communities facing economic challenges and limited access to education and healthcare. These marginalized groups are the targeted beneficiaries of our product. Additionally, our initiative benefits the broader community by promoting environmental conservation, creating economic opportunities, and fostering social cohesion and resilience. The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) highlights a significant domestic demand for natural honey in Malawi. Despite this demand, the national aggregate production output falls short by 30% per annum to meet consumption needs. This deficit underscores the opportunity for initiatives like the Lweya Honey Initiative to contribute to closing the gap between supply and demand, thereby addressing both economic and nutritional needs within the country.

With 2 years in data analysis and social entrepreneurship, she holds a Bachelor's in Aircraft Manufacturing Engineering and a Master's in Data Science and AI. Lusungu's climate change certifications and volunteer work in beekeepi Doreen Thotho(co-founder), an experienced Technology Developer, brings expertise in designing innovative tech solutions for social impact. With a background in IoT development, digital finance platforms, and automated solutions, she excels in enhancing digital transformation. Holding an MSc in IoT and a BEng in Electronics and Telecommunications Engineering, she has led significant projects in agriculture, water access, and energy management.
