Teenage mum childcare Centre
Describe your project or startup in a few words
To establish a childcare centre in Korogocho and Mathare slums to permit teenage mothers to enroll back to school, offer baby immunization, family planning, nutrtional councelling, breast milk bank, gender base violence and post-delivery psychosis support.
01.01 Describe your project in more detail
Guided by existing policies and laws, establish a model childcare center that will act as a safe holding place for babies born of teenage mothers of Korogocho and Mathare. This will allow the teenage mother to be in school and psychologically settled with the safety of her baby assured. School performance and psychological status will improve remarkably. These childcare centers can provide safe breastfeeding rooms for the young mothers, breast milk storage, and immunization center for the babies and nutrition education hub for the baby and mother. Mothers who are victims of sexual abuse, gender base violence, post-delivery psychosis can find a center for psychotherapy and support group. Young people friendly sexual and reproductive health counseling on family planning can be offered in the process.
01.02 What is the main problem you are trying to solve?
There has been a concerted effort on reintegrating teenage mothers to back to school. Consequently, a household welcoming a baby of teenage girl in an informal settlement of Mathare or Korogocho is faced with adverse psycho economic challenges that come with the material and emotional demands brought by the baby. Most of these families can barely afford a decent meal, re-integrating the teenage mother back to school will force the household to find a caretaker for the baby and this is financially involving. In most cases one of the family members who are economically viable will be forced to shelve their income generating activities to take care of the baby. In slum areas, a day spent in taking a baby to hospital for treatment or immunization may cost a family an entire day meal. Households slide into abject poverty at the baby’s expense and upon re-integration of teenage mother back to school.
