EcoShield is a sustainable solution for molded fiber food packaging, using nanocellulose for strength and plant-based wax for oil and grease resistance. It eliminates harmful PFAS, is fully compostable, and aligns with TotalEnergies' sustainability goals.

EcoShield is an innovative solution designed for sustainable food packaging. It targets molded fiber articles (MFA) by using two key bio-based components: nanocellulose and plant-based wax. Nanocellulose, incorporated during the "wet-end" stage, enhances the structural strength and barrier properties of the MFA. Post thermoforming, a thin layer of plant-based wax, derived from renewable sources such as sunflower or carnauba, is applied, creating a robust barrier against oil and grease. This dual approach eliminates the need for harmful PFAS chemicals, offering a performance comparable to traditional solutions while being fully compostable. EcoShield ensures that the entire packaging remains biodegradable, aligning with circular economy principles. Our solution not only meets the growing consumer demand for eco-friendly packaging but also integrates seamlessly into existing MFA production processes, making it a scalable, cost-effective alternative. The main problem EcoShield aims to solve is the environmental and health hazards posed by traditional food packaging materials, particularly those relying on PFAS chemicals for oil and grease resistance. PFAS are persistent in the environment and pose significant health risks, leading to increased scrutiny and regulatory pressure. Additionally, many current packaging solutions are not compostable, contributing to landfill waste and environmental degradation. The food service sector urgently needs a sustainable, effective alternative that provides the necessary barrier properties without compromising on environmental impact. EcoShield addresses this by offering a bio-based, compostable solution that eliminates harmful chemicals while maintaining the performance required to keep food fresh and prevent leaks, thus promoting a healthier planet and aligning with consumer demand for eco-friendly products. Our project aims to introduce an innovative solution to the food packaging industry with EcoShield. Unlike traditional oil and grease barriers, EcoShield offers a sustainable alternative that effectively prevents oil and grease from penetrating food packaging materials, ensuring food safety and integrity while reducing environmental impact. The uniqueness of EcoShield lies in its composition and functionality. While there are existing oil and grease barriers on the market, they often rely on non-biodegradable materials such as plastics or chemical coatings, contributing to pollution and environmental degradation. In contrast, EcoShield is made from sustainable and biodegradable materials, addressing concerns about plastic pollution and offering a more environmentally friendly option. Moreover, EcoShield's innovative formula not only provides excellent oil and grease resistance but also offers biodegradability without compromising performance.

05.09 Who are your main potential competitors and what makes you stand out from them?

Our main potential competitors in the food packaging industry include companies offering traditional oil and grease barrier solutions such as plastic coatings or laminates. These competitors rely on non-biodegradable materials and may not prioritize sustainability in their product offerings. What sets us apart from these competitors is our focus on sustainability and innovation. While traditional solutions may offer effective oil and grease resistance, they often contribute to environmental pollution and are not aligned with current consumer preferences for eco-friendly products. In contrast, our product, EcoShield, is made from sustainable and biodegradable materials, providing excellent oil and grease resistance without compromising environmental responsibility. Additionally, EcoShield offers superior performance compared to some eco-friendly alternatives currently on the market.
