Describe your project or startup in a few words
M-Takataka offers an innovative waste management solution in Kenya through a mobile application, featuring a strategic network of recycling points, financial incentives for recycling on the user end and computer vision technology for waste segregation.
01.01 Describe your project in more detail
The app makes it easy for users through computer vision, to scan through their waste for separation purposes. Additionally, Our unique mobile app enables users to locate the nearest recycling point or request pickup services from specific locations with ease. Beyond convenience, we incentivize responsible waste disposal by offering financial rewards for recycling efforts, transforming the way people perceive and engage with their discarded materials.
01.02 What is the main problem you are trying to solve?
Kenya produces between three and four thousand tons of trash every day. A total of 259,252 tons of plastic packaging are utilized annually; of this waste, 15% is landfilled, 18% is recycled, and 67% is dumped in open landfills after it has been used. We aim to develop a solution to boost the recycling rates of waste. Our approach involves initiating recycling practices at the household level, enabling users to differentiate recyclable materials within items. This initiative not only raises awareness about recycling but also fosters a culture of sustainable waste management in the long term.
01.03 Tell us the major benefits and/or advantages of using the product/service that your project intends to provide (at least 3).
In a country where waste management has presented significant challenges, we offer a comprehensive solution that's convenient, eco-friendly, and community-focused. With a strategic network of recycling points spanning urban and rural areas, we make recycling a seamless and rewarding experience for everyone.
