Describe your project or startup in a few words
A Nairobi-based enterprise that collects, processes, and resells used alcohol bottles, promoting recycling and sustainability while providing glass products to manufacturers, artisans, and construction companies.
01.01 Describe your project in more detail
A Nairobi-based company dedicated to collecting, processing, and repurposing used alcohol glass bottles. We establish collection points at bars, hotels, and restaurants, offering incentives to businesses for returning bottles. Our facility sorts, cleans, and crushes the glass for resale. Cleaned bottles are resold to bottling companies, while crushed glass is sold to manufacturers as cullet. Additionally, we create decorative products from repurposed glass. This approach supports environmental sustainability by reducing landfill waste and provides economic benefits by supplying affordable materials to various industries EcoGlass aims to foster a circular economy, create jobs, and promote sustainable practices in Kenya.
01.02 What is the main problem you are trying to solve?
EcoGlass addresses the critical issue of glass waste management in Nairobi. Currently, used alcohol bottles are frequently discarded in landfills, contributing to environmental pollution and resource waste. The main problem is the lack of efficient systems for collecting and recycling these bottles, which leads to significant environmental degradation and missed economic opportunities. By establishing a comprehensive collection, processing, and resale network for used glass bottles, EcoGlass aims to reduce landfill waste, lower carbon emissions from glass production, and provide a sustainable supply of recycled glass to local industries. This initiative not only helps mitigate environmental impacts but also supports the circular economy and creates jobs in the recycling sector.
01.03 Tell us the major benefits and/or advantages of using the product/service that your project intends to provide (at least 3).
Environmental Impact: Reduces landfill waste and pollution by recycling used glass bottles, lowering the need for raw materials and energy in new glass production, and decreasing greenhouse gas emissions. Economic Opportunities: Creates jobs in collection, processing, and sales, and offers an affordable source of raw materials for local glass manufacturers, artisans, and construction companies, stimulating the local economy. Resource Efficiency: Enhances the circular economy by repurposing discarded glass into reusable bottles and cullet, minimizing resource wastage and promoting sustainable practices in various industries.
01.04 Please describe who exactly your project is aimed at serving. Who are the targeted beneficiaries?
Alcohol Producers and Bottlers: Companies such as East African Breweries and Kenya Wines Agencies benefit from a reliable, cost-effective supply of recycled bottles, reducing production costs and enhancing their sustainability efforts. Glass Manufacturers: Firms like Central Glass Industries gain access to affordable cullet, lowering their raw material expenses and environmental impact. Local Artisans and Craftspeople: Artisans and small businesses use repurposed glass for creating decorative items, providing them with unique materials to enhance their product offerings. Hospitality Sector: Bars, restaurants, and hotels can participate in recycling programs, reducing waste management costs and enhancing their eco-friendly credentials. Communities and Environment: Reduces landfill waste and environmental pollution, benefiting the broader community through improved environmental health and job creation in the recycling sector.

EcoGlass improves upon traditional glass recycling by focusing on a specific waste stream (alcohol bottles), enhancing collection efficiency, and creating value-added products from recycled materials. It extends the concept of general glass recycling by targeting a specific type of glass waste (alcohol bottles) and expanding the application of recycled glass in various industries. There is a growing demand for sustainable waste management solutions in Nairobi, particularly for alcohol glass bottles, which are currently underutilized in recycling efforts. It modernizes and optimizes traditional glass recycling practices by focusing on a specific waste stream (alcohol bottles) and integrating innovative approaches in collection, processing, and product development.
