Locust Early Warning System
Describe your project or startup in a few words
Loews aims to develop a locust early warning system leveraging Geospatial Data and Generative AI to map out locust breeding grounds for early intervention , protecting agriculture and reducing economic losses.
01.01 Describe your project in more detail
Loews aims to develop a comprehensive locust early warning system using advanced geospatial data to map breeding grounds for timely intervention. This system will empower stakeholders, including farmers, the government, and other agencies in Kenya, with real-time information and in-depth analysis on locust outbreaks and mitigation strategies. By leveraging Retrieval Augmented Generation (RAG) techniques and generative AI models like GPT-3.5-turbo, the system will enable, for example, a farmer to query domain-specific models via chat for information on hazardous pesticides to avoid. Projections will be based on support forms created for farmers to report locust sightings in Kenya. The data collected will also be used to develop better predictive geospatial models. Lastly, a Mitigation Page will be included to provide credible videos and Articles from sources such as Ministry of Agriculture, and FAO.
01.02 What is the main problem you are trying to solve?
In Kenya, where agriculture is vital for the economy and the livelihoods of millions, recurring locust outbreaks pose a substantial threat to agricultural sustainability, food security, and economic stability. The unpredictable nature of these outbreaks, driven by a complex interplay of ecological, climatic, and environmental factors, renders traditional prediction and management methods ineffective, often resulting in devastating consequences. During a recent locust infestation, over 70,000 hectares of land were impacted, affecting an estimated 3 million people with severe acute food insecurity. Overall, the invasion affected over 7 million hectares of crops and cost the region over $40 million to mitigate. Existing strategies for locust outbreak forecasting and control in Kenya face notable constraints, struggling to adapt to swiftly evolving locust populations and delaying effective responses.
01.03 Tell us the major benefits and/or advantages of using the product/service that your project intends to provide (at least 3).

Empowered Decision-Making - Farmers, government agencies, and other stakeholders receive up-to-date information and in-depth analysis on locust outbreaks and mitigation strategies, enabling informed decision-making and effective resource allocation. 3. Enhanced Predictive Accuracy - The integration of support forms for reporting locust sightings and the use of AI models like GPT-3.5-turbo improve the accuracy of predictive geospatial models, leading to better forecasting and more efficient management of locust populations. 4. Comprehensive Support and Resources - The Mitigation Page offers credible videos and articles from sources like the Ministry of Agriculture and FAO.
01.04 Please describe who exactly your project is aimed at serving. Who are the targeted beneficiaries?
The locust early warning system by Loews is aimed at serving a diverse range of stakeholders in Kenya, primarily focusing on: 1. Farmers - Small-scale and large-scale farmers who rely on agriculture for their livelihoods will benefit from timely and accurate information to protect their crops and reduce economic losses. 2. Government Agencies - National and local government bodies responsible for agricultural management and disaster response will gain access to valuable data and predictive models to formulate and implement effective locust control strategies. 3. Agricultural Organizations - NGOs, research institutions, and other organizations involved in agricultural sustainability and food security can utilize the system for data-driven decision-making and resource allocation. 4. Local Communities - Residents of locust-affected areas will benefit indirectly through improved food security and economic stability as a result of more effective locust outbreak management.
