Game change in semi arid area
Describe your project or startup in a few words
In my project of crossbreeding of Galla and Boer goats is objected to create new breed and increase productivity. My selection is due to climate adaptation in semi arid area like kitui county. The traits will be more resilient and adaptable to semi arid.
01.01 Describe your project in more detail
The aim of my project is to create a new breed that combine the desired characteristics of both parent breeds and increase productivity. I choose to breed Galla and Boer goats due to their climatic adaptation in semi arid area like in kitui. The expected traits will have improved meat quality, growth rate, disease resistance and adaptability in semi arid areas In my management- I am planning to vaccinate the goats after six months, deworming regularly while changing the type of deworm after sometime and having proper record keeping. Due to challenges associated with crossbreeding like disease outbreak and drought, I will implement by ensuring regular vaccination and deworming. My future plan is to expand my project and collaborate with other breeders and research institutions
01.02 What is the main problem you are trying to solve?
The main problem I am trying to solve by crossbreeding Galla and Boer goats in semi arid area like kitui is to develop a breed that is more resilient and adaptable to harsh environmental conditions of these region. By crossbreeding these two goat breeds which have different strengths and characteristics, I am aiming to create animals that have traits such as drought tolerance, disease resistance, better feed conversion rates and improved meat and milk production. This can help to increase productivity and sustainability of goat farming in semi arid areas where resources such as water and forage may be limited. Additionally, these crossbred goats may also fetch better prices in commercial market due to their desirable traits and increased productivity
01.03 Tell us the major benefits and/or advantages of using the product/service that your project intends to provide (at least 3).
1. Increased Adaptability: Crossbreeding Galla and Boer goats creates offspring that possess a blend of traits from both breeds, resulting in animals that are more resilient and adaptable to the challenging conditions of semi-arid areas. They are better able to withstand heat, drought, and poor-quality forage. 2. Enhanced Growth Rates: Boer goats are known for their rapid growth rates and meat production, while Galla goats are valued for their hardiness and reproductive traits. Crossbreeding these two breeds can result in offspring that exhibit improved growth rates and meat quality, making them more profitable for farmers in semi-arid regions. 3. Disease Resistance: By combining the genetic strengths of both Galla and Boer goats, the resulting crossbred offspring may have improved disease resistance. This can be particularly beneficial in semi-arid areas where disease outbreaks can have a devastating impact on goat populations. 4. Improved Fertility and Reproduction:
01.04 Please describe who exactly your project is aimed at serving. Who are the targeted beneficiaries?
The project of crossbreeding Galla and Boer goats is aimed at serving small-scale farmers and livestock keepers in semi arid areas, particularly in regions where goat farming is a common practice. The primary beneficiaries of this project are the farmers themselves, who stand to benefit from the improved productivity, disease resistance, and higher meat yield of the resultant crossbred goats. Additionally, consumers in these regions would also benefit from the increased availability of quality goat meat at affordable prices. The project also aims to improve the livelihoods of rural communities by providing a sustainable source of income and nutrition. Overall, the project targets to enhance food security, income generation, and livestock production in developing countries through the crossbreeding of Galla and Boer goats.
