Describe your project or startup in a few words
Blue Wings Nigeria provides affordable and innovative animal feed from organic waste to help poultry and livestock farmers reduce production cost and maximize profit, protect the environment, and ensure food security for generations to come.
01.01 Describe your project in more detail
Blue Wings Nigeria, to be established in Makurdi, Benue State, Nigeria, seek to innovate the animal feed industry through sustainable practices. By producing insect-based protein feed from organic waste, utilizing Black Soldier Fly larvae. This initiative addresses key challenges: Economic Impact: With animal feed costs comprising over 80% of production expenses for farmers, our cost-effective insect-based feed will enhance profitability and economic resilience. Environmental Impact: By converting organic waste into protein-rich larvae, we reduce greenhouse gas emissions and promote a circular economy in agriculture, mitigating resource depletion. Social Impact: Our solution improves food security, reduces production cost, and supports local farmers with sustainable, affordable feed alternatives. Blue Wings Nigeria envisions empowering farmers, protecting the environment, and ensuring food security. We aim to foster a greener, more resilient agricultural sector in Nigeria.
01.02 What is the main problem you are trying to solve?
The main problem Blue Wings Nigeria aims to solve is the high cost of feed and environmental impact of organic waste. Animal feed expenses constitute a significant burden for farmers, leading to reduced profitability and economic vulnerability. Concurrently, conventional feed production contributes to resource depletion, greenhouse gas emissions, and threatens food security. By producing insect-based protein feed from organic waste, Blue Wings Nigeria addresses these challenges by offering a cost-effective, and sustainable alternative that enhances farmers profitability, reduces environmental harm, and supports long-term food security and agricultural sustainability in Nigeria.
01.03 Tell us the major benefits and/or advantages of using the product/service that your project intends to provide (at least 3).
The insect-based protein feed provided by Blue Wings Nigeria offers several key benefits: Cost-effectiveness: By utilizing organic waste to produce insect larvae as protein source, our feed solution significantly reduces production costs compared to traditional feeds like soybean and corn meal, thereby improving farmers' profitability and economic resilience. Environmental Sustainability: Our approach mitigates environmental impact by reducing greenhouse gas emissions associated with organic waste decomposition. It promotes resource efficiency and supports a circular economy in agriculture, contributing to ecological balance. Enhanced Food Security: Blue Wings Nigeria's insect-based protein feed enhances food security by providing a sustainable and locally produced alternative to expensive imported feeds. This reduces dependency on external sources and stabilizes feed supply for poultry and livestock, ultimately supporting farmers' livelihoods and bolstering agricultural resilience.
01.04 Please describe who exactly your project is aimed at serving. Who are the targeted beneficiaries?
Blue Wings Nigeria targets multiple beneficiaries in Nigeria's agricultural sector: Farmers: Smallholder and commercial farmers facing high feed costs will benefit from our cost-effective insect-based protein feed, improving profitability and supporting sustainable practices. Livestock Industry: Producers of poultry, pigs, and fish will access a locally produced, sustainable feed alternative, enhancing animal health and productivity while reducing dependency on costly imports. Environment: By converting organic waste into insect protein, we promote environmental sustainability by reducing greenhouse gas emissions and supporting ecological balance in agriculture. Local Communities: Our project stimulates economic development and food security in Benue State, Nigeria and beyond, enhancing agricultural resilience and socio-economic stability. Global Sustainability Goals: Aligned with UN Sustainable Development Goals, Blue Wings Nigeria help addresses global challenges.
