Gas Flaring to Steam Power
Describe your project or startup in a few words
This project focuses on analysing the technical and economic viability of generating electricity using a steam turbine that is fed with flow station gas flares.
01.01 Describe your project in more detail
This project explores the potential of harnessing gas flares (specifically from the Nigeria's Niger Delta region) to generate electricity using steam turbines. Gas flaring, prevalent in this area, leads to significant energy waste and several environmental impacts. The study assesses the technical feasibility of steam turbine integration, the economic viability of capturing and utilizing gas flares, and the environmental benefits of reducing greenhouse gas emissions. The aim is to provide actionable recommendations for stakeholders, demonstrating that this approach can mitigate environmental impacts, enhance energy security, and provide economic benefits by converting waste into a valuable resource Utilizing flare gas heat involves converting thermal energy from the flare gas into steam energy, which is then transformed into mechanical and electrical energy.
01.02 What is the main problem you are trying to solve?
Gas flaring in Nigeria's Niger Delta is a major issue, causing significant environmental, economic, and social problems. Approximately 23 billion cubic meters of natural gas are flared annually, contributing to 13% of global gas flaring. This practice releases large amounts of greenhouse gases and pollutants, exacerbating climate change and harming local ecosystems. Economically, gas flaring results in the loss of billions of dollars annually, as valuable natural gas is wasted instead of being utilized. The social impact includes health problems for communities near flare sites and reduced agricultural productivity. This project promises to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, generate revenue, enhance energy security, and improve living conditions for local communities. By addressing the technical, economic, and environmental aspects of this solution, the project seeks to demonstrate the feasibility and benefits of turning waste into a valuable resource.
01.03 Tell us the major benefits and/or advantages of using the product/service that your project intends to provide (at least 3).
1. Environmental Benefits: Significantly reduces greenhouse gas emissions and other pollutants, mitigating climate change and improving air quality. 2. Economic Advantages: Converts wasted gas into a valuable resource, generating revenue from electricity sales and reducing economic losses associated with gas flaring. 3. Energy Security: Enhances energy supply by providing a reliable and sustainable source of electricity, reducing reliance on traditional fossil fuels. 4. Health Improvements: Decreases pollution-related health issues in communities near flare sites, leading to better public health outcomes. 5. Sustainability: Promotes the use of existing resources more efficiently, contributing to sustainable development goals and reducing environmental degradation.
01.04 Please describe who exactly your project is aimed at serving. Who are the targeted beneficiaries?
The project is aimed at serving multiple stakeholders in Nigeria, particularly those in the Niger Delta region: 1. Local Communities: Residents living near gas flaring sites will benefit from improved air quality, reduced health risks, and enhanced local economies through job creation and improved agricultural productivity. 2. Energy Consumers: The generated electricity will provide a more reliable and sustainable energy source, benefiting households and businesses by reducing power outages and energy costs. 3. Oil and Gas Companies: These companies will benefit from regulatory compliance, potential revenue from gas previously flared, and improved corporate social responsibility profiles. 4. Government and Policymakers: The project supports national goals of reducing gas flaring, improving energy security, and meeting environmental targets, thus benefiting the broader economy and public health.
