Describe your project or startup in a few words
Repurposing agricultural wastes like egg shells, poultry feathers into material composites as alternatives for single use plastics in the agricultural value chain.
01.01 Describe your project in more detail
Plastic use and production is one of the key contributors to global carbon emissions. Through an innovative and environmentally efficient process, agricultural solid wastes like feathers, egg shells can be combine with a binder, to manufacture new materials as alternative products for use in various service industries. A large amount of waste feathers, egg shells are generated each year in Nigeria, with the vast majority ending up in landfills, drainages. Project REJIG aims to collect these waste chicken feathers, egg shells and convert them into a range of composites, which provide a sustainable alternative to plastic and metal made products used in poultry farms and other industries.
01.02 What is the main problem you are trying to solve?
I am tackling two clear global issues; the amount of waste feathers and egg shells being sent to landfills, and the unsustainability of materials used in the agribusiness and other industries.
01.03 Tell us the major benefits and/or advantages of using the product/service that your project intends to provide (at least 3).
1. A great choice for farmers and service industries who want to reduce their carbon footprint while contributing to environmental sustainability. 2. Reduction of target amount of waste and the pollution that results from its disposal. 3. Products would serve as replacements for plastic type accessories thereby reducing plastic use, and carbon footprint.
