Describe your project or startup in a few words

I want to start producing and manufacturing nail and hair products within South Africa, with the aim of distributing these products across Africa. Through this project we will be able to employ scientists and lots of other production technicians

01.01 Describe your project in more detail

After doing a lot of research, I have come to the realisation that nail and hair products (even hair extensions) are rarely manufactured within Africa. Most of these products are outsourced from China, Vietnam or America. This made me wonder, why has this market not been tapped into? Though I still have a lot of research to do, I still believe it would be a good idea to start somewhere, travelling these countries and learning how these products are made, learning what machinery’s are used to create them, learn what it takes to produce them and eventually bring that knowledge to my country. Though I might need to start by white labelling my brand, I believe that this would make a good 3-5year growth plan for my business in the long run.

01.02 What is the main problem you are trying to solve?

Apart from just solving the employment problem in my country, I believe this project can also bring about innovation in terms of manufacturing and also increase our trade factors. Instead of people looking to trade with countries outside the African borders, this will bring trade into our South African economy with other countries, giving us an advantage over our neighbours.

01.03 Tell us the major benefits and/or advantages of using the product/service that your project intends to provide (at least 3).

1. Businesses in my industry will not have to worry about having to cross borders in order to get these products. 2. Since we have been using these products for a while, it will give us the ability to produce better and stronger products. 3. South Africa will become one of the suppliers of such products.

01.04 Please describe who exactly your project is aimed at serving. Who are the targeted beneficiaries?

Our target beneficiaries are nail, hair and beauty salons. Also individuals who want to buy the products and apply them at home. We aim to target clients with C-type hair, cancer clients who prefer to wear wigs, or any other hair diseases. We aim at producing purely organic products for the African market. We are also targeting clients who suffer feet or toenail diseases and injuries.

05.08 Justification

05.09 Who are your main potential competitors and what makes you stand out from them?

Our competitors have a slight advantage over us due to the fact that they have more space to operate at the fullness of their capacity, however we have a marketing advantage over most our competitors, even though our space is small, lots of clients know about us and look forward to us getting a much bigger space to cater to their needs. We also have a compliance advantage over our competitors, most of our competition comprises of foreign nationals whose businesses are very much informal and non-compliant, within our community. However bigger nail salons such as Tammy Tailor and Sorbet have a financial advantage over us, due to the fact that they produce and sell their own branded products and have been in the industry for much longer, they have the financial capabilities to do vigorous marketing, to sell products, to hire more stuff and to rent spaces in bigger malls, they have a much easier access to the market, nonetheless.

10.06 Are you initiating actions within your community to promote the role of female entrepreneurs?

Yes, I always educate my clients about opportunities that are out there for female entrepreneurs, I also share with other females whatever opportunities I come across.
