Describe your project or startup in a few words
Charcool Climate provides sustainable, electricity-free cooling solutions for informal traders and small-scale farmers in South Africa. Our charcoal chambers extend the shelf life of perishable goods, reduce food waste, and increase traders' income.
01.01 Describe your project in more detail
Charcool Climate, established in March 2024, aims to address the financial losses informal traders and small-scale farmers face due to produce spoilage from the intense heat of Mbombela. Inspired by extensive needs analysis from 7 community outreach programmes, we designed a zero-cooling charcoal chamber, a technology used by small-scale farmers in Kenya. This sustainable, electricity-free solution extends the shelf life of perishable goods by maintaining temperatures 10-15 degrees Celsius lower than the outside temperature. The chamber uses wet charcoal and water to create the cooling effect, making it an affordable alternative to refrigerators. We have engaged extensively with informal traders to ensure our design meets their needs, and our initial testing has shown promising results. We are now refining our designs for market readiness and have registered our enterprise with the CIPC.
01.02 What is the main problem you are trying to solve?
Charcool Climate is addressing the significant financial losses informal traders and small-scale farmers face due to the spoilage of perishable produce caused by the intense heat in Mbombela. Without access to affordable and sustainable cooling solutions, these vendors and farmers are unable to keep their goods fresh, resulting in reduced revenues and increased food waste. Traditional methods like keeping produce in water overnight are unsustainable and often damage the goods. Our solution, the zero-cooling charcoal chamber, provides a cost-effective, electricity-free method to extend the shelf life of produce, thereby enhancing the profitability of these vendors and farmers and reducing overall food waste. This innovative approach not only supports the economic stability of informal traders but also contributes to food security and environmental sustainability.
01.03 Tell us the major benefits and/or advantages of using the product/service that your project intends to provide (at least 3).
Cost-Effective Cooling: Unlike conventional refrigeration systems, our charcoal chambers do not require electricity, making them an affordable solution for informal traders and small-scale farmers. This is especially crucial in areas affected by frequent power outages or where electricity is costly. Prolonged Freshness and Reduced Waste: By maintaining a temperature 10-15 degrees Celsius lower than the outside temperature, the charcoal chamber extends the shelf life of perishable goods. This reduction in spoilage translates directly into lower financial losses for vendors and farmers and contributes to decreased food waste. Sustainability and Simplicity: The technology is based on simple, proven principles that require minimal maintenance and no advanced technical knowledge. The key components—wet charcoal and water—are readily available and easy to manage, making the system highly sustainable and user-friendly for our target market.
01.04 Please describe who exactly your project is aimed at serving. Who are the targeted beneficiaries?
Our project is aimed at serving informal traders and small-scale farmers in South Africa, particularly those operating in urban and peri-urban areas like Mbombela. These individuals often face significant financial losses due to the spoilage of perishable goods caused by high temperatures and the lack of affordable, reliable refrigeration solutions. Our primary beneficiaries are street vendors who sell fresh produce such as tomatoes, green peppers, cabbages, bananas, apples, peas, grapes, potatoes, and spinach. Additionally, small-scale farmers without access to electricity or who are affected by frequent power outages also stand to benefit from our zero-cooling charcoal chambers. By extending the shelf life of their produce, we aim to improve their income stability, reduce food waste, and support their overall economic resilience. Through our community outreach and engagement, we ensure that our product meets their specific needs and enhances their livelihoods.
