Describe your project or startup in a few words
Our project aims to create a sustainable model community in Aburi's farming area. We are developing a one-acre community using recycled shipping containers for housing and recycled plastics for streets.
01.01 Describe your project in more detail
We are embarking on an ambitious project to develop a sustainable community in the picturesque farming area of Aburi. Our vision encompasses a one-acre model community, utilizing recycled shipping containers for residential structures and streets constructed from recycled plastics. Our design principles emphasize sustainability, including solar power, rainwater harvesting, and homes supporting subsistence farming. Furthermore, we are integrating on-site recycling plants to reinforce our commitment to sustainability. These facilities will process waste materials, converting them into reusable resources that support the community's infrastructure. By incorporating elements of the circular economy, we aim to create a self-sustaining ecosystem that minimizes waste and promotes resource efficiency.
01.02 What is the main problem you are trying to solve?
Housing Affordability: Ghana faces a significant housing deficit, with an estimated shortfall of over 1.7 million housing units. By using recycled shipping containers, we can significantly reduce construction costs, making housing more affordable for low and middle-income families. Waste Management: Ghana generates approximately 1.1 million tons of plastic waste annually, with only about 5% being recycled. Our project will utilize plastic waste for constructing streets and infrastructure, helping to reduce landfill burden and environmental pollution. Energy Efficiency: Access to reliable and affordable energy remains a challenge in many parts of Ghana. By incorporating solar power, we ensure a sustainable and renewable energy source for the community, reducing dependence on the national grid and the repeated occurence of "dumsor"
01.03 Tell us the major benefits and/or advantages of using the product/service that your project intends to provide (at least 3).
-Affordable and Eco-Friendly Housing: Utilizing recycled shipping containers and plastics reduces construction costs and addresses Ghana’s housing deficit. This approach also tackles waste management issues, as Ghana generates about 1.1 million tons of plastic waste annually, with only 5% recycled. -Renewable Energy and Water Conservation: Incorporating solar power ensures a reliable, renewable energy source, reducing dependence on the national grid and lowering carbon emissions. Rainwater harvesting systems provide a sustainable water source, promoting efficient use and reducing reliance on external supplies. -Food Security and Economic Opportunities: Homes support subsistence farming, enhancing food security and self-sufficiency. The project creates jobs in construction, waste management, agriculture, and education, contributing to local economic development. -Leadership in Sustainability and UN SDGs Alignment
