Introducing an environmentally friendly alternative to plastic packaging: paper packaging made from palm bunches and coconut husk. These biodegradable and compostable paper packaging meets the needs of businesses while significantly reducing plastic waste
01.01 Describe your project in more detail
Ghana is facing a severe environmental challenge in the form of plastic waste pollution due increased consumption of single-use plastics have and an alarming rise in plastic waste generation, causing significant harm to the country's ecosystems, human health, and quality of dry and wet land. About 2.58 million metric tonnes of raw plastics are imported into Ghana annually, of which 73 per cent effectively ends up as waste, while only 19 per cent is re-used, according to the Environmental Protection Agency. Our key intervention is targeting reduction of plastic waste by substituting it with a paper for packaging. Harnessing the natural fibres of palm and coconut, we create rebuts packaging solutions that are durable, biodegradable and ideal for industries and consumers.
01.02 What is the main problem you are trying to solve?
The widespread use of single-use plastics, such as bags, bottles, and packaging materials, has become ingrained in Ghanaian society, leading to an exponential surge in plastic waste generation. Plastic waste left on dry land degrades into smaller micro plastics, which then infiltrate the soil, affecting agricultural productivity and contaminating both surface and groundwater. Additionally, plastic waste in water bodies poses a severe threat to aquatic life and can disrupt the delicate balance of aquatic ecosystems. Ghana generates approximately 840,000 tonnes of plastic waste per year and approximately 9.5% of that is collected for recycling (World Economic Forum, 2023).
