Describe your project or startup in a few words
Evnoia Cycle our Grocery Circular Economy program, is a holistic solution addressing food waste through surplus food rescue, educational outreach programs, food waste recycle and fostering urban agriculture through mini-greenhouses.
01.01 Describe your project in more detail
Our initiative aims to tackle the dual challenges of food waste and limited access to fresh produce in urban environments. By rescuing surplus food from farms and retailers and redistributing it to those in need, the program reduces food waste while also promoting urban agriculture through mini-greenhouses. These mini-greenhouses empower urban dwellers to cultivate their own fresh produce, reducing reliance on long-distance transportation and fostering self-sufficiency. Through educational outreach and closed-loop systems for composting food scraps, the initiative empowers communities to build resilient, sustainable food systems at the local level.
01.02 What is the main problem you are trying to solve?
Food wastage is progressively becoming a part of the Ghanaian lifestyle. It forms about 68% of municipal solid waste in the country. 3.2 million tons of food is either lost or wasted along the supply chain in Ghana, costing about 762.32 billion in Ghanaian cedis (GH₵) annually. Food waste in landfills produces methane, a greenhouse gas that is 25 times more potent than carbon dioxide. Consequently, urban food security is a function of the access to food and food waste management. About 27% of the population in Greater Accra is food insecure. Farmers’ lack of direct access to markets, poor storage practices leading to post harvest losses of perishable produce, bad road networks and the existence of middlemen are all contributing factors to food waste
01.03 Tell us the major benefits and/or advantages of using the product/service that your project intends to provide (at least 3).
Food Waste Reduction: It tackles the significant problem of food waste by rescuing surplus food from farms and retailers, ensuring that perfectly good food reaches consumers instead of being discarded. Environmental Impact: By reducing food waste, the program helps mitigate the environmental impact associated with food production, transportation, and disposal, including greenhouse gas emissions and resource depletion. Urban Agriculture: It promotes urban agriculture through mini-greenhouses, providing a solution for urban dwellers to access fresh produce locally and reduce reliance on long-distance transportation, thereby lowering carbon emissions and promoting self-sufficiency. Community Empowerment: By offering educational workshops and resources for urban agriculture, the initiative empowers communities to take control of their food sources, fostering resilience and sustainability at the local level.
