Describe your project or startup in a few words
Pura is a Spanish word which means Pure. This is a product with the focus of increasing the shelf life of fresh tomatoes for over a year with it own juices without preservative
01.01 Describe your project in more detail
One of the major crops produced in Ghana is tomatoes and it mostly has a shelf life of 19-22 days . To increase the the shelf life, the tomatoes has to be processed into Paste or ketchup ( by the industries) or kept in the freezer ( by households ) . However, there are seasons in the year where fresh tomatoes is scarce thus making the few available very expensive. Ghanaians would have to depend on tomato paste for cooking. This paste is suitable for specific meals but not all , some examples being soup, grounded pepper for kenkey etc. There are some people that react or have allergies eating these pastes because of the additives added. Hence to make fresh tomatoes available all year round, Pura will be preserving fresh tomatoes in bottles for 1-2 years to make them available all year round.
01.02 What is the main problem you are trying to solve?
Pura would like to address various problems but the main will be to address the issue of post harvest losses Which affects the livelihood of the farmers in terms of their income and also reduces the amount of food available for consumption. In an article written by Taylor & Francis (2023) Cognet food & agriculture. Data was taken from 203 farmers at the Offinso-North District and it was recorded that averagely the farmers loose 3506.3kg of the tomatoes and its financial value of 3598.7 cedis. This keeps the farmers always in poverty and they are not able to provide good education for their children Also the article captured some of the reasons for the reduction in food consumption and one of these reasons was the unavailability of reliable market . So to bridges these gaps, Pura will put measures in place to address this issue of post harvest losses
