Describe your project or startup in a few words
GreenFuel harnesses the power of sustainability by repurposing sawdust into eco-friendly fuel pellets. This innovative initiative addresses two pressing environmental challenges: deforestation and carbon emissions. By providing an alternative to charcoal.
01.01 Describe your project in more detail
GreenFuel, a pioneering initiative in Ghana, addresses critical environmental and socio-economic issues with statistics underscoring the urgency of its mission. Ghana has lost approximately 39.3% of its forest cover, primarily due to charcoal production, impacting biodiversity and ecosystem stability. Alarmingly, about 1.7 million metric tons of sawdust are burnt annually in the Bono region, exacerbating greenhouse gas emissions and contributing to climate change. This unsustainable practice directly threatens the country's natural resources and exacerbates socio-economic disparities. GreenFuel steps in to combat these challenges by repurposing sawdust into eco-friendly fuel pellets, effectively mitigating deforestation and reducing carbon emissions. Through joint efforts with sawmills, GreenFuel not only addresses environmental degradation but also creates economic opportunities. By repurposing sawdust, GreenFuel transforms waste into a valuable resource, aligning with the SDGs.
01.02 What is the main problem you are trying to solve?
GreenFuel confronts Ghana's alarming deforestation, mainly driven by charcoal production. Ghana has lost around 39.3% of its forests over the last four decades, predominantly due to the production of charcoal. Shockingly, 1.7 million metric tons of sawdust is burned annually in the bono region only, compounding greenhouse gas emissions. GreenFuel's innovative solution repurposes sawdust into eco-friendly fuel pellets, curbing deforestation and carbon emissions. This sustainable approach preserves Ghana's ecosystems while economically empowering local communities.
