01.01 Describe your startup in more detail
Timoya Farms is an agritech startup revolutionizing the rice production industry in Ghana. We integrate an innovative and eco-friendly parboiling system that is circular, enhancing the quality and nutritional value of Aviella Rice. Our parboiling system utilizes clean energy sources and recycles waste, reducing greenhouse gas emissions and promoting sustainability. By working directly with smallholder farmers and women processors, we empower them with advanced cultivation techniques, training programs, and access to markets. We aim to create a positive social and environmental impact by improving rural livelihoods, promoting gender equality, and advancing sustainable agricultural practices. Timoya Farms is committed to bridging the gap between production and consumption, ensuring food security and quality for consumers while supporting the most marginalized and climate-affected communities.
01.02 What is the main problem you are trying to solve?
Timoya Farms is solving the problem of inefficient rice production and processing in Ghana. Smallholder farmers, producing a significant portion of the country's rice, lack access to advanced processing technologies and sustainable practices, leading to low yields, poor-quality rice, and financial instability. Consumers demand high-quality, nutritious rice, but the market is often flooded with imported rice that doesn't support local economies. Over 60% of Ghana's rice consumption is imported, and smallholder farmers struggle with productivity and post-harvest losses. This issue is compounded by the environmental impact of traditional rice processing methods, contributing to greenhouse gas emissions and waste. Our focus is on rural areas in Ghana where smallholder farmers and women processors are most affected by these challenges. By addressing these issues, we aim to improve food security, enhance rural livelihoods, and promote sustainability
01.03 Tell us the major benefits and/or advantages of using the product/service that your startup provides (at least 3).
1. Enhanced Quality and Yield: Our innovative parboiling system ensures higher yields and superior rice quality. The system reduces breakage and improves the nutritional value of rice, offering consumers a healthier, more reliable product consistently.. 2. Sustainability and Environmental Impact: By utilizing clean energy sources like solar and biogas from waste products, our parboiling system minimizes greenhouse gas emissions and reduces environmental impact. This aligns with sustainable agricultural practices and promotes environmental stewardship among smallholder farmers. 3. Economic Empowerment: We provide training and resources to smallholder farmers and women processors, improving their skills and productivity. This not only enhances their livelihoods but also contributes to local economic growth. The establishment of sales outlets further supports market access, ensuring that the benefits of increased production reach both producers and consumers.
01.04 Please describe who exactly your startup’s product/service is aimed at serving. Who are the targeted beneficiaries?
Our startup primarily serves smallholder rice farmers and women processors in rural communities, focusing on those with limited access to modern agricultural technologies and markets. These farmers often face challenges related to inefficient processing methods, low yields, and poor-quality produce, which affect their livelihoods and food security. On the other hand, our product aims to benefit health-conscious consumers who demand high-quality, nutritious, and sustainably produced rice at affordable prices. By improving the quality and nutritional value of rice through our innovative parboiling system, we cater to consumers seeking healthier food options. Furthermore, our initiative indirectly benefits the broader community by promoting environmental sustainability and reducing the carbon footprint of rice production. By targeting these groups, we aim to empower marginalized farmers, enhance food quality for consumers, and contribute to sustainable agricultural practices.
