Green Vanguard collaborates with youth, smallholder farmers and rural schools in Ghana to promote sustainable farming and environmental education to empower underserved communities to build resilience and lead climate action.

Green Vanguard is an initiative that drives sustainable development in rural Ghana through a collaborative approach. We bring together youth, smallholder farmers, and rural schools to address pressing environmental and socio-economic challenges. Our core activities include promoting sustainable agricultural practices and providing environmental education. Through the Farm2Feed program, we support schools to collaborate with smallholder farmers to cultivate backyard school farms. Produce from the school farms directly support school nutrition. Surplus is sold in the local market, the funds are used partly as income for the farmers, and the rest is invested into the program.

01.02 What is the main problem you are trying to solve?

The main problem Green Vanguard aims to solve is the interconnected challenges of food insecurity and economic vulnerability in rural Ghana. It focuses on promoting sustainable agriculture practices to enhance food security through school farms, and support smallholder farmers to improve their livelihoods and resilience to climate change.

1. Green Vanguard promotes sustainable agricultural practices that benefit the environment by reducing chemical use, conserving water, and promoting biodiversity. This leads to healthier ecosystems and mitigates environmental degradation. 2. School farms supported by Green Vanguard enhance food security by providing nutritious food locally for underserved students. This reduces dependence on external food sources, critical in rural areas where access to nutritious food may be limited. Ultimately, student attendance in schools improves. 3. Supporting smallholder farmers not only improves their income through market access for surplus produce but also enhances their skills and capacity through training in sustainable farming techniques. This contributes to economic stability and resilience in rural communities.
