Describe your project or startup in a few words
Kodu Technology is eradicating period poverty by producing biodegradable, affordable and ecofriendly sanitary pads from fibres of plantain and banana waste stems.
01.01 Describe your startup in more detail
Kodu Technology is a startup company that uses the waste stems from plantains and bananas to make inexpensive, biodegradable sanitary pads. Our goal is to reduce period poverty in rural Africa by making environmentally friendly menstruation products affordable for all women and girls, regardless of their financial situation. By repurposing agricultural waste, we address two critical issues: menstrual health and environmental sustainability. Our pads are designed to decompose quickly, reducing the environmental impact compared to conventional plastic-based products. Through strategic partnerships with NGOs, local governments, and community organizations, we ensure widespread distribution and education on menstrual hygiene. Our innovative approach not only empowers women and girls by giving them the confidence to attend school and work without interruption but also fosters economic growth through job creation in the production and distribution processes.
01.02 What is the main problem you are trying to solve?
The main problem Kodu Technology is addressing is period poverty and its associated consequences in rural Africa. The associated consequences include; 1.Period Poverty: A large number of women and girls in rural Africa utilise less hygienic options because they cannot afford sanitary products. 2.Economic and Educational Disruption: Girls who are impoverished during their menstrual cycles skip job and schooling, which has an effect on both. 3.Environmental Pollution: Problems with waste management and pollution are caused by traditional sanitary pads made of plastic.
01.03 Tell us the major benefits and/or advantages of using the product/service that your startup provides (at least 3).
1. Affordability and Accessibility: Because our pads are affordable, they help women and girls in rural and low-income communities get access to menstrual hygiene products and reduce period poverty. 2. Environmental Sustainability: Our biodegradable pads, which are made from leftover plantain and banana stems, lessen environmental pollution and encourage the circular economy by recycling agricultural waste. 3. Health and Empowerment:Our safe and hygienic pads improve women's and girls' health, increase school attendance, and enhance economic productivity by allowing uninterrupted participation in daily activities.
