Community-based Ecosan Hub
Describe your project or startup in a few words
The Ecosan Hub is a community-based sustainable sanitation and energy solution for communities. The facility leverages advanced technologies to reduce waste and pollution, promoting a healthier environment, towards a cleaner and greener future.
01.01 Describe your project in more detail
There is a very high demand of clean water to promote a healthy living and maintain a clean environment. The Kampala City suburbs are faced with a challenge of waste (human and organic) management that tends to affect their livelihoods in many various ways. The Ecosan hub provides sustainable sanitation services while generating economic opportunities. It emphasizes resource recovery (water, energy, nutrients) and closed-loop systems. Integrated with innovative technology (Artificial Intelligence and IoT sensors), the Ecosan Hub treats wastewater, produces biogas and nutrient-rich fertilizer. Integrates with organic waste management, sustainable agriculture and circular economy systems. Scalable, replicable and data-driven. Empowers communities, reduces environmental pollution and promotes public health.
01.02 What is the main problem you are trying to solve?
The EcoSan Hub tackles a problem of inadequate sanitation and waste (human and organic) management in urban and subburb areas leading to environmental pollution, public health risks, and wasted resources. Existing solutions are centralised, expensive and inefficient. There is need for a decentralised, community-driven approach that recovers biogas, and nutrient-rich fertilisers etc. from waste, promotes circular economy principles ( reduce, reuse, recycle, regenerate, sharing, product-as-a-service, closed loop). These human and organic waste streams are typically sent to the Ecosan Hub for treatment , processing , and resource recovery, rather than being discharged into the environment or sent to landfills.
01.03 Tell us the major benefits and/or advantages of using the product/service that your project intends to provide (at least 3).
1. Improved public health through safe treatment and management of human waste and organic matter, reducing the risk of waterborne diseases and environmental pollution. 2. Recovery of valuable resources like water, biogas and nutrients reducing waste disposal costs. 3. Reduced environmental pollution through decentralised treatment and management of waste. 4. Cost-effective, scalable financially viable alternative to traditional centralised sanitation systems. 5. Community empowerment through job creation, promoting education fostering ownership.
01.04 Please describe who exactly your project is aimed at serving. Who are the targeted beneficiaries?
The project majorly aims to help the local people in the city suburbs of Kampala City that are being affected by sewage and lack clean water.
