To minimize the dangers associated with kicks and lost circulation during drilling operations, including the potential loss of lives and property. Specifically, we aim to evaluate the effects of blowouts resulting from kicks on rig workers and owners, design and implement an early kick and lost circulation detection and warning system to prevent blowouts, and test the functionality of the detection and warning system to ensure its effectiveness in enhancing wellbore safety.
01.02 What is the main problem you are trying to solve?
Our project addresses a critical challenge within the focus area of environment and public service: the risk of environmental disasters and public safety hazards associated with kicks and lost circulation during drilling operations in the petroleum industry. Kicks, which occur when formation fluids enter the wellbore, and lost circulation, which involves unintended loss of drilling fluid into formations, pose significant risks to both the environment and public safety. Instances like the Deepwater Horizon incident in 2010 have demonstrated the devastating consequences of such events, including large-scale oil spills, environmental degradation, and loss of human lives. By developing an early kick and lost circulation detection system, our project aims to mitigate these risks and enhance environmental protection and public safety. The system will provide real-time monitoring of mud levels in drilling operations, enabling early detection of potential kicks or lost circulation events.

The primary beneficiaries of our project include rig workers, rig owners, and the wider petroleum industry. Rig workers will benefit from increased safety measures, reducing the risk of accidents and potential loss of lives. Rig owners will benefit from minimized downtime and reduced financial losses associated with blowouts. Additionally, the petroleum industry as a whole will benefit from improved operational efficiency and enhanced environmental stewardship. For example, by implementing an early detection system, rig workers can evacuate safely in case of emergencies, mitigating potential disasters like the Deepwater Horizon incident.
