01.01 Describe your project in more detail
The "Waste-to-Wealth: Empowering Refugee Women and vulnerable Ugandans through Recycling" project aims to address the twin challenges of poverty and environmental degradation in Kampala, Uganda. By transforming plastic waste into marketable products, such as eco-friendly bags, decorative furniture, and custom notebooks, the project will empower refugee women and teenage girls with practical skills and entrepreneurial knowledge. Through comprehensive training in crafting, business management, and innovative upcycling techniques, participants will create sustainable income sources. The initiative will also focus on enhancing educational support for children and promoting community cohesion. By establishing market linkages and an e-commerce platform, the project ensures broad market access for the products, fostering economic independence. The project will run environmental awareness campaigns to promote recycling and sustainable living within the communities of Rubaga and Makindye.
01.02 What is the main problem you are trying to solve?
The "Waste-to-Wealth" project addresses the dual issues of poverty and environmental degradation in the congested urban areas of Kampala, Uganda. Refugee women and teenage girls in these areas face severe unemployment and economic hardship, struggling to support their families. Concurrently, the city grapples with rampant plastic waste pollution, contributing to environmental health risks and unsightly urban landscapes. This project seeks to transform these challenges into opportunities by providing skills training for crafting and upcycling plastic waste into valuable products. By creating sustainable income sources for refugee women and promoting recycling practices, the project aims to alleviate poverty, reduce plastic waste, and foster community cohesion and resilience. Through market integration and educational support, it also enhances the participants' ability to support their children’s education and overall well-being.

Economic Empowerment and Job Creation: The project equips refugee women and teenage girls with skills to craft marketable products from recycled plastic, creating sustainable income sources. This economic empowerment reduces poverty and provides financial stability for their families. Environmental Impact and Sustainability: By transforming plastic waste into valuable crafts, the project significantly reduces environmental pollution in Kampala. It promotes sustainable waste management practices, contributing to a cleaner and healthier urban environment. Enhanced Educational Opportunities and Community Cohesion: The project supports the education of participants' children by providing school fees and materials, particularly focusing on retaining teenage girls in school. Additionally, it fosters a supportive community network, integrating refugees into the local economy and promoting social inclusion and resilience.

The "Waste-to-Wealth" project is specifically aimed at serving refugee and Ugandan women, and teenage girls living in the overcrowded areas of Rubaga and Makindye in Kampala Uganda. These individuals often face extreme economic hardship, limited employment opportunities, and social marginalization. The project focuses on empowering these women, who are typically responsible for supporting their families, by providing them with skills to transform plastic waste into marketable products. Additionally, the initiative extends its support to the children of these women, particularly emphasizing educational opportunities for teenage girls. By fostering economic independence, enhancing educational support, and promoting social inclusion, the project seeks to uplift these vulnerable groups, integrating them into the local economy and improving their overall well-being.

Community Development and Livelihood Expert: One of our key partners, Musiimenta Prossy, brings extensive expertise in community development and livelihood enhancement. With a background in working with marginalized groups, she has successfully led several initiatives focused on empowering vulnerable communities through skill development and capacity building. Her deep understanding of the socio-economic challenges faced by refugee women in Uganda enables her to design and implement effective training programs that foster economic self-sufficiency and community resilience. Financial Management Specialist: Irene Kyomuhangi is a seasoned financial manager with a strong track record in overseeing financial operations and providing strategic financial guidance for Non goverment organizations. She excels in budget planning, resource allocation, and financial oversight, ensuring that the project's funds are used efficiently and transparently. Her expertise in financial literacy and manageme
