DripSense Infusion Monitor is a compact, battery-powered device for setting and continuously monitoring IV drip rates. It features occlusion alerts, volume infusion alerts, automatic IV line closure, and remote monitoring.
01.01 Describe your project in more detail
Dripsense is a device designed to optimize IV infusion management. It assists nurses in setting accurate IV drip rates by displaying real-time drops per minute on its screen. The device continuously monitors the drip rate, calculating the infused volume based on the IV line drop factor and the counted drops. It features an occlusion alert that beeps when infusion stops or the IV bag is empty. Users can set a specific infusion volume, and the device beeps and automatically closes the IV line once this volume is delivered or when the bag is empty. A rechargeable battery ensures at least seven days of operation, with LED indicators for battery status and low-charge warnings. A dripping animation on the screen confirms active infusion. Additionally, the device includes remote monitoring software that alerts the nurses' station to any device issues, detailing the type of error for timely intervention. This ensures precise, efficient, and safe IV therapy management in medical settings.
01.02 What is the main problem you are trying to solve?
The DripSense Infusion Monitor addresses the high incidence of adverse drug events (ADEs) associated with IV therapy by providing real-time monitoring of drip rates and immediate alerts for occlusions or completed infusions. This ensures precise medication dosing and reduces the risk of over or under-dosing and reverse flow (Backflow of blood from patient to IV bag, critical in environments where up to 90% of hospitalized patients receive IV medications. It also alleviates the burden on nurses, particularly in regions with high patient-to-nurse ratios like Uganda, by automating monitoring and integrating remote capabilities, thus enhancing patient safety, medication effectiveness, and nursing efficiency in IV infusion management.

Remote Monitoring: Centralized oversight via software enables proactive management of multiple devices, ensuring continuous IV therapy and timely interventions.

The DripSense Infusion Monitor is designed to serve healthcare professionals, specifically nurses and medical staff involved in administering IV infusions. They are the primary beneficiaries as the device enhances their ability to monitor and manage IV therapy efficiently and safely. Additionally, patients benefit from improved medication administration accuracy, reduced risks of adverse drug events, and overall enhanced quality of care. Healthcare facilities, including hospitals and clinics, also benefit by optimizing workflow, reducing medication errors, and improving resource utilization through streamlined IV infusion management. 1.Ms.Nassejje Mary Anthony-She is a Biomedical Engineer by Profession and is a reserach assistant on the project.She has expertise in Computer aided design and medical devices troubleshotting. 2.Dr,Najjingo Elizabeth-She is a paediatrician and she is an end user of the device and she guides the design,refinements and testing of the device. 3.Ms.Hellen Birungi-She is a Business analayst and makes sure the development solves the problem while keeping it affordable. 4.Mr.Ilemut Ivan-He is an electronics Engineer leads the development Team. 5.Me.Mukama Martin-He is a senior software developer and leads the software integration and evelopment of the device.
