FarmLink is a project designed to help farmers obtain genuine agricultural inputs by connecting them with verified suppliers. This initiative aims to boost agricultural productivity, leading to increased incomes for farmers and improved food availability.

01.01 Describe your project in more detail

According to a 2022 survey by the Anti-Counterfeit Network (ACN), more than half of seeds on the Ugandan market are fake. Some say that agricultural inputs sold at retail level in Uganda are often fake or poor quality. Fake or substandard products lead to poor crop yields, financial losses for farmers, and can contribute to health and environmental hazards due to unchecked or harmful chemical compositions. FarmLink is establishing a reliable channel to assist farmers in accessing authentic products, thereby mitigating the risk of counterfeit purchases. Farmers access the platform by dialing a USSD code on their mobile devices and navigating user-friendly menus to order inputs like seeds, fertilizers, pesticides, and insecticides. Orders are processed through our web platform, sourced from verified suppliers, and delivered promptly to the nearest pickup station. Supporting both feature phones and smartphones, FARMlink is accessible to both smallholder and largescale farmers.

01.02 What is the main problem you are trying to solve?

FarmLink is solving the critical issue of counterfeit agricultural inputs in Uganda. Many farmers face significant losses due to fake fertilizers, pesticides, and seeds that fail to meet their needs and pose risks to crop productivity and public health. This is because its challenging finding reliable suppliers of genuine agricultural inputs. By providing a platform that ensures the traceability and authenticity of agricultural products, FarmLink connects farmers with verified suppliers, guaranteeing access to genuine, high-quality inputs. This solution addresses the widespread problem of counterfeit products in the market, helping to improve crop yields, enhance farmer incomes, and promote sustainable agricultural practices.

Authenticity Assurance: FarmLink guarantees that farmers receive genuine agricultural inputs from verified suppliers, eliminating the risk of counterfeit products and ensuring the quality and safety of their purchases. Enhanced Productivity and Income: By accessing high-quality seeds, fertilizers, pesticides, and insecticides, farmers can significantly improve their crop yields, leading to higher productivity and increased income. Ease of Access and Convenience: Farmers can easily order the inputs they need using a simple USSD code, making the platform accessible even to those with basic feature phones. The platform provides a seamless experience from browsing products to making secure payments and selecting convenient pick-up points. Traceability: The integration of AI technology ensures the traceability of every product, providing peace of mind and building trust in the supply chain.

FarmLink is aimed at serving farmers in Uganda who are significantly affected by counterfeit agricultural inputs. These farmers often rely on agriculture for their livelihoods and face challenges in accessing genuine, high-quality seeds, fertilizers, pesticides, and insecticides. By targeting these farmers, FarmLink seeks to improve their productivity, income, and overall well-being.

SSUUNA FRANCIS, Chief Technical Officer of FARMlink, brings extensive skills in programming and web applications. He led the design and implementation of the FARMlink platform, ensuring its functionality and user-friendliness. His expertise in various programming languages and frameworks has been instrumental in connecting farmers with authentic agricultural inputs via a USSD-based platform. KAKOOZA IVAN Agricultural expert of FARMlink combines IT knowledge with expert agricultural skills. He owns a successful farm where he applies his deep understanding of agricultural techniques. Ivan's expertise in crop management, soil health, and sustainable methods ensures high productivity. His ability to integrate IT solutions with hands-on farming experience drives innovative approaches in agriculture.

FARMlink significantly boosts the region's financial development by enhancing agricultural sector efficiency. Through authentic supplier connections and quality inputs, FARMlink safeguards existing agricultural jobs while creating new opportunities, especially in rural areas where agriculture is key. FARMlink's focus on authentic supplier connections also extends to sourcing local products and raw materials when possible. This supports local businesses and bolsters regional economic growth. Respecting regional values, FARMlink closely collaborates with local communities, integrating their needs and customs into operations. This ensures cultural alignment and sensitivity in FARMlink's activities. FARMlink prioritizes open and honest communication with the local community. EazyAgric is a potential competitor. FarmLink stands out because we go through a comprehensive process of veryifying suppliers of genuine agro inputs and follow up with our farmers to see if the purchased inputs worked well. Eazyagric doesn't do this.
