Describe your project or startup in a few words
Green Homes Africa aims to design and construct environmentally-friendly dwellings, prioritizing the needs of low-income and displaced individuals in Uganda. These homes are designed to ensure safety, comfort, and overall well-being for their inhabitants.
01.01 Describe your project in more detail
Uganda, Africa's primary refugee haven, hosts around 1.45 million refugees, predominantly from South Sudan, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Burundi, and Somalia. Upholding a compassionate policy, Uganda's 2006 Refugee Act grants refugees essential rights like employment, freedom of movement, and settlement living. However, despite its hospitality, Uganda faces a housing crisis. The demand for affordable housing surpasses supply, impacting majorly low-income and displaced families who struggle to secure decent accommodation within Uganda. Addressing this issue, Green Homes Africa endeavours to build eco-friendly homes in Uganda, specifically catering to low-income and displaced individuals. These residences prioritize safety, comfort, and overall well-being, offering sustainable solutions to Uganda's housing challenges. By prioritizing the needs of vulnerable populations, Green Homes Africa contributes significantly to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.
01.02 What is the main problem you are trying to solve?
Green Homes Africa addresses Uganda's significant housing deficit, exacerbated by a lack of affordable options. With about 2.4 million housing units needed, many low-income earners are priced out of the formal housing market due to high construction costs and limited financing. This shortage affects both rural and urban areas, leaving millions without adequate housing. Additionally, Uganda's status as Africa's largest refugee host further strains housing resources. Green Homes Africa's eco-friendly residences aim to provide safe and sustainable housing solutions for low-income and displaced communities. By prioritizing safety, comfort, and well-being, the project not only offers shelter but also contributes to long-term sustainability and community development. This initiative aligns with Uganda's progressive refugee policy, providing displaced populations with dignified living conditions and reinforcing the country's commitment to humanitarian principles.
