MBARALI CLEAN CHARCOAL PROJECT
Describe your project or startup in a few words
We are providing a clean, affordable, feasible, environmental friendly, strong heat production and healthy clean cooking energy in form of clean charcoal produced from recycling of rice-husk waste materials making into a briquettes shaped clean charcoal
01.01 Describe your project in more detail
Mbarali clean charcoal project is an innovative projecting intending to bring impacts on the clean cooking energy industry by coming up with a cost friendly, health friendly and accessible clean cooking energy For ages now, more than 80% of residents of Tanzania has been sourcing from trees related products such as fire woods and charcoal as a main source of cooking energy. This habit of trees dependent has created multiple problems such as environmental destructions, health problems to women such as cancers and blindness and reduced quality of women participation to economic activities since much of their time is used in collecting fire woods Our projects produces charcoal from rice husk remains thus protecting trees, the energy produced by this charcoal is three times stronger and lasting than wood charcoal, it has no smoke emissions thus protecting health of users, it also creates an employment for women on local community hence fascinating society development by empowering women
01.02 What is the main problem you are trying to solve?
AFFORDABLE AND CLEAN ENERGY Our main solution is in accordance with the SDG 7 which entails on ensuring access to affordable, reliable, sustainable and modern energy for all mainly renewable clean cooking energy. Our team was moved highly into this project after its participation in a study which was aiming in identifying health hazardous effects of using non-clean cooking energy, unfortunately most of the identified hazards were preventable by an access to clean energy It was through a series of testing and investigations carried out to test the hypothesis available on clean charcoal that we were able to alive to this conclusion of developing charcoal from rice husk materials Given the fact that more than 80% of our population depend on charcoal and wood for cooking hence coming up with an alternative charcoal will attract more users and given that this charcoal burns more strong than the wood charcoal then rest assured that we are going to demolish trees related cooking energy
01.03 Tell us the major benefits and/or advantages of using the product/service that your project intends to provide (at least 3).
1. Women; having access to clean energy will save their health by keeping them away from smokes as it is associated with more than 33,000 deaths every year in Tanzania, also saving their time they use in search for firewood thus directing that time to productive activities and raising their incomes to meet their daily needs 2. Youth: will create employment to youth around our plants and our selling depots (productive age girls and young women) 3. Environment protection; By saving trees who are commonly approached by majority as their primary source of energy for cooking thus with this charcoal we are going to facilitate the green future 4. Industrial power; especially those in high demand of heat in their processes will have a great alternative and force them to turn blind to trees which they are currently using since with our charcoal they get strong, constant long lasting heat production of no harm effect to people and environment
01.04 Please describe who exactly your project is aimed at serving. Who are the targeted beneficiaries?
WOMEN AND YOUNG GIRLS From the personal experience of my partner who grew up in northern highlands as a Girl , she faced a great challenge of being assigned with daily task of making sure the family has eaten by the fact that the fathers would supply food requirements but the cooking energy is a women task. Considering the kind of the environment they were living they had to walk for 3 hours away from home in search for fire woods thus more than half of their daily time was spend on cooking energy searches She wants to make a change to this girls by bringing an affordable clean energy at their doors and giving them a chance to work in our plants thus not only will they have less time to look for clean energy but also they will earn by working in our plants, also to protect their health by exposing them to healthier cooking energy, give them access to supplying these clean charcoal and reaching more young girls and women hence securing their future in safe hands

Our clean charcoal is produced from rice husk materials which are wastes and if unhanded well can lead to pollution of water sources, hence with our process of converting them to charcoal we are facilitating the clean environment and clean water sources
02.07.01 My project contributes to the Affordable and clean energy goal
7 - Strongly Agree
02.07.02 Affordable and clean energy - Justification

05.08 Justification
For decades now our communities have been using charcoal from trees as one of the main source of cooking energy. The technology of using wastes and converting them to clan charcoal is one of the new technologies in our country but studies we conducted showed positive perception from people who use it We are not bringing the same charcoal as that has been in use for ages but this time we are bringing in clean charcoal by the fact that one, it is not from trees, secondly the combustion of this charcoal doesn't produce smoke or much ashes as the traditional charcoal, thirdly our charcoal doesn't affect the health of our users. Through these reasons we even identified our products as not a MERE CHARCOAL BUT A CLEAN CHARCOAL
05.09 Who are your main potential competitors and what makes you stand out from them?
As has been witnessed that our country is making a great shift from non-clean to clean cooking energy, now our competitors here are the companies dealing with clean cooking energy as we are but who are in the gas and oil industries, also electric industries. But with them we have a competitive advantage than them as follows 1. The infrastructure of the gas and electricity industry limits the number of people to use as less people are accessible to their services but our clean charcoal is accessible up to the interior 2. The initial subscription cost for buying LPG and electricity stoves is higher compared to our charcoal stoves 3. The refilling for gas cooking energy (LPG) and electricity is much more costful than buying a bag of our clean charcoal
10.06 Are you initiating actions within your community to promote the role of female entrepreneurs?
YES We have been into various projects for empowering women and girls both government and non-government funded, provided that even my partner is a female she has forecasted a clear plan on how we are going to favor women into our productions 2. We will be providing entrepreneurial education to all women around our plants aiming on expanding the knowledge on economic opportunities in our communities
