Describe your project or startup in a few words
The production of quality sunflower edible oil and in southern Highlands of Tanzania tackling the problem of high prices and unhealthy edible cooking oil.
01.01 Describe your project in more detail
Cooking oil is one of the essential needs for healthy meal preparations. Thus it is a product that is being used for food everyday, almost in every food that is being produced. With the population growth, and awareness of the heathy benefits of sunflower this product has led to increasing demand with the local sunflower farming not being able to sustain the market. Thus the project is comprised of two categories which are the; Sunflower plantation plantation and second part is the sunflower oil processing. The plantation involves involves purchasing of 200 acres of land, farm clearing, purchase of a 50 HP tractor with it's seed planter and high quality seeds. The processing part involves the purchasing of a screw type oil press machine, installation, preparing packages,a van to supply oil and the shop for the sales. The production of oil from the local farmers ought to start immediately after the installation of the processing machine.
01.02 What is the main problem you are trying to solve?
The shortage of quality and healthy cooking oil has been a very serious problem in Tanzania. In the recent years has been fueled much from the ongoing conflicts on major producer of the product Russia-Ukraine war. From the Tanzania investment centre(TIC) states that "Despite strong growth in sunflower seed production, the level of edible oil processing in Tanzania is low compared to prevailing demand (est. at 300,000 – 400,000 tons a year)". This leads to the Government importing 320000 tons of edible oil per year. At the local level that's in Mbinga district majority of the people use the low quality processed oil which usually has foul smell and the commonly known "KORIE " which contains higher amounts of hardening fat unsuitable for people with heart problems. Also the low production in the Sunflower production locally has lead to price increase of up to 9000Tsh per liter in the last year and sometimes the product is not at all available in the shops.
01.03 Tell us the major benefits and/or advantages of using the product/service that your project intends to provide (at least 3).
The benefits are as follows; 1.The product will be fresh and readily available from processing without addition of preservatives. 2.No availability of the mixture with hardening fats. 3.The by products will be sold to entrepreneurs in animals keeping to increase their weight. 4.Absence of cholesterol makes it suitable for people with blood pressure. 5.Very low amounts of aflatoxins in sunflower seeds makes it suitable for cancer prevention. 6.Employment opportunity to youth , women and to the people that will be operating the machine and farms.
01.04 Please describe who exactly your project is aimed at serving. Who are the targeted beneficiaries?
The beneficiaries of this project are categorized into three groups. 1.Local small scale sunflower farmers.providing market for the raw materials, also converting their raw material direct to cooking oil. 2.livestock/animal husbandry. The left overs of the sunflower provides a very nice animal food,it is used for weight increase in pigs, chicken and cows.Hence improving lively hood of the pastoralists. 3. General public More supply of the oil will lead to price stabilization and healthy families.

02.01.01 My project contributes to the No poverty goal
7 - Strongly Agree
02.01.02 No poverty - Justification
This business has as stated above very huge market, that is there is no need to do extra business activities to promote the product. The project is intended to increase income of the following groups; 1.Women who convert the leftovers from pressing machine into edible oil, they sell it locally improving their income while others use it for food vendor business. 2.Sunflower farmers. Presence of the processing industry makes the ready market for the sunflower seeds and the oil itself. Also instead of selling raw sunflower seeds the farmers will process it by adding value to oil which is of higher prices hence it's income as well. 3.Youth and labourers. The farming and processing will involve the use of local men and women thus increasing their income hence lowering poverty.

05.09 Who are your main potential competitors and what makes you stand out from them?
1.Korie cooking oil This is the main distributor of edible cooking oil.the oil produced usually harden at low temperature increasing heart attack problem. Due to improved health awareness amongst the people, many more tend to look first for sunflower cooking oil. 2.Local small scale industries. They depend mostly on the farmers to bring sunflower seeds, thus run short of the edible oil when the harvest season is over. We intend to be the power house of the edible oil production by introducing large scale farming apart from processing.
10.06 Are you initiating actions within your community to promote the role of female entrepreneurs?
Yes. 1.female entrepreneurs use the leftovers process them in their local ways to remake sunflower cooking oil. 2.Women entrepreneurs are the main partners, many work to collect sunflower harvested seeds process and sell the oil in their respective streets. 3.chicken and pig keeping entrepreneurship.the availability of the byproducts of the pressing process known locally as "mashudu" are used to rapid increase weight of animals leading to higher income for the entrepreneurs.
