Farming of Victoria Tilapia_
Describe your project or startup in a few words
Victoria Tilapia is among critically endangered specie under IUCN red list . The demand of this fish specie exceeds supply. This project involves cultivation of Victoria Tilapia in concrete tanks with the use of RAS technology so as to restore the specie
01.01 Describe your project in more detail
This project is about cultivating Victoria Tilapia fish on Recirculating Aquaculture system (RAS) Concrete tanks. This method reduces the use of land and water unlike traditional ponds and dams which takes larger space and uses a lot of water which needs to be exchanged regularly. RAS allows high density fish production with a breeding environment that is controllable. This method also allows filtration and recycling of water in way that only little water might be added sometimes to compensate the water lost due to evaporation. The production of fish in RAS tanks is very economical where by in 1 cubic meter produces 100 fish unlike ponds which accommodate 4 Victoria Tilapia per 1 square meter.
01.02 What is the main problem you are trying to solve?
This project will restore and conserve Victoria Tilapia fish which is under the threat of being extinct as it was reported under IUCN red list. This project is planning to restore the population of Victoria Tilapia at the same time increasing the supply at our local markets focusing on central part of Tanzania with the probability of expanding in the future. At the first year of the project commencement it is expected 3600kg of Victoria Tilapia will be produced which is equivalent to 13,768.29 usd. This harvest will bring approximately 18% increase of Victoria Tilapia supply annually.
01.03 Tell us the major benefits and/or advantages of using the product/service that your project intends to provide (at least 3).
The following are the benefits of this project: 1. Victoria Tilapia is a good source of Protein, so with this project the problem of malnutrition is going to be minimized especially in central Tanzania 2. The use of RAS concrete tanks will help to conserve water because of automated purification of the system unlike traditional ponds 3. Land conservation; RAS technology normally supports economical utilization of land, where by a small land produces much more fish than ponds
01.04 Please describe who exactly your project is aimed at serving. Who are the targeted beneficiaries?
Targeted beneficiaries of the project are; 1. Whole sale and Retail fresh fish traders in Dodoma region. They won't suffer any more on the competition of getting Victoria Tilapia as it was once before because the supply is going to rise by 18% 2. Local tax authority; Through the revenue from this project, local authorities will be able to collect tax which might be used for development of various local projects. 3. local fishermen; This project is planning to provide occasional trainings and modern fishing equipment given out in future for the aim of sharing the profit with the surrounding community
