Describe your project or startup in a few words
Hyalosustainers transforms food waste into high-quality hyaluronic acid using microbial fermentation. Our innovative, eco-friendly process addresses environmental challenges while providing a cost-effective, locally for the cosmetics and pharmaceutical.
01.01 Describe your project in more detail
Hyalosustainers is pioneering the sustainable production of hyaluronic acid from food waste through advanced biotechnological methods. Our process involves using specific strains of bacteria to convert organic food waste into high-quality hyaluronic acid. This innovative approach addresses the dual challenges of waste management and the high cost of hyaluronic acid imports in Tanzania. Our project offers a cost-effective, environmentally friendly solution by reducing food waste and transforming it into a valuable product for various industries, including cosmetics, skincare, pharmaceuticals, and medical devices. By leveraging locally available raw materials and cutting-edge fermentation technology, we aim to provide a reliable, sustainable source of hyaluronic acid that meets the growing market demand. Hyalosustainers not only supports environmental conservation but also stimulates the local economy by creating jobs and reducing dependency on imported goods.
01.02 What is the main problem you are trying to solve?
The main problem Hyalosustainers is addressing is the dual challenge of organic food waste accumulation and the high cost and limited availability of hyaluronic acid in Tanzania. Dar es Salaam alone disposes of approximately 5,000 tons of food waste per day, leading to significant environmental issues such as pollution and greenhouse gas emissions. Concurrently, local industries in Africa, including cosmetics, skincare, pharmaceuticals, and medical devices, face high costs and limited accessibility to hyaluronic acid, which they must import from international companies. These imports are not only expensive but also subject to supply chain disruptions, making hyaluronic acid less accessible to local customers. Our innovative solution tackles these problems by converting food waste into valuable hyaluronic acid (HA) using microbial fermentation. This process provides a cost-effective, locally produced alternative to imported HA and reduces the environmental impact of food waste.
01.03 Tell us the major benefits and/or advantages of using the product/service that your project intends to provide (at least 3).
The Hyalosustainers project offers several major benefits. Firstly, it promotes environmental sustainability by utilizing food wastes into valuable hyaluronic acid which is potential for skin aging, cancer treatments, joints treatments, opthalmic problems. This reduces waste accumulation, pollution, and greenhouse gas emissions, supporting a circular economy. Secondly, our locally produced hyaluronic acid provides a cost-effective alternative to expensive imports from international companies, lowering production costs for local industries and making the product more accessible and affordable for African customers. Lastly, the project stimulates economic growth by creating jobs in biotechnology and waste management sectors and supporting local industries with a reliable, sustainable source of hyaluronic acid. This reduces dependency on international suppliers and enhances market competitiveness, driving positive economic and environmental impacts in Tanzania and beyond.
01.04 Please describe who exactly your project is aimed at serving. Who are the targeted beneficiaries?
The Hyalosustainers project primarily serves local industries in Tanzania and Africa, including cosmetics, skincare, pharmaceuticals, and medical devices, by providing a cost-effective, sustainable hyaluronic acid. These industries benefit from reduced production costs and increased accessibility to high-quality hyaluronic acid. Also, benefits the environment and community by reducing food waste and mitigating pollution and greenhouse gas emissions. Local farmers and food producers benefit indirectly; organic waste is repurposed, promoting circular economy. All wastes generated during fermentation and purification are converted into booster fertilizers, enhancing plant growth and agricultural activities. Consumers in cosmetics and healthcare gain access to more affordable, sustainably produced products. Lastly, the project creates employment opportunities in biotechnology and waste management, contributing to local economic development and improving community livelihoods.
